The medieval city of Perigueux, the capital of Perigord Blanc, with its magnificent cathedral and Roman ruins is only 22km away. This area of the Dordogne is well known as the gastronomical centre of France with many great restaurants (some with Michelin stars!) and farmer’s markets. Many grand chateaux and historical sites are nearby, including the Lascaux caves of prehistoric paintings made 17,000 years ago and the limestone dwellings at Les Eyzies inhabited by the Cro-Magnon man. Stair Hall From the dining room pass to the stair hall. One of our favorite parts of Chateau Rochette, it ascends to the 2nd and 3rd floor. Living Room Pass now to the living room whose chestnut floors, huge fireplace and dimensions nearly duplicate those of the dining room. The furniture is decidedly comfortable as is the atmosphere. It is a place to relax with friends and family after a day of adventure or to just read a good book. 1st Floor Bedroom Pass out of the living room and up five steps to the 1st floor bedroom. A double bedroom faces view of the valley. A stone fireplace stands against the high peaked ceiling. This part of the chateau was built somewhat later and as a result captured the lower portion of one of the towers which interestingly now functions as this sleeping chamber. 1st Floor Crimson Bathroom Pass through the 1st floor bedroom into the bathroom. Without any question, this ensuite bathroom is by far the most incongruous part of Chateau Rochette. Created lovingly for a teenage daughter during the 1960s - with a sunken tub! - The walls, the floor, and yes, the ceiling, are all very beautiful crimson red tiles. Dazzling! Photographs don’t do it justice. Duplex Room Pass again through the 1st floor bedroom and through another door, and you will find a small room with a small table and chair, two tables for suitcases and then a spiral stairway leading up into the tower and the small tower double bedroom. Certainly a great place to be banished to and very romantic, it has a 1820’s style double bed and the best view at Chateau Rochette over the pool and valley beyond. Through its own door, the tower room shares the crimson bathroom with the 1st floor bedroom. Master Bedroom 1 - second floor Opposite the bed and its hangings a massive fireplace is centered. The room is large and nearly duplicates the size of the dining room below. Adjoining it and also large is the master bathroom with tub, free standing shower, bidet, toilet and sink. A casement window looks out over the distant hills and valley. Master Bedroom 2 - second floor A beautifully carved stone fireplace stands adjacent to the bed with its warm red bed hangings. From there you can look out the tall windows across to the hills on the other side of the valley. The bathroom is located in the watch tower. The windows, once used by lookouts, were designed for these commanding views. Included are a tub/shower, toilet, and sink. 3rd Floor The 3rd floor is not occupied and not accessible to guests. Explore the estate, discover local flora, wander through the ancient woods and you may even come across wild boars. There’s old stone walls, wells and even the ruins of a 12th century church.  You can walk down to the Dordogne river and enjoy a picnic on the banks of the river, looking over towards another impressive castle on the other side. The nearest village is around a 15-minute walk through the forests or just five minutes in the car – here you will find a boulangerie as well as a small grocery store with some fresh produce as well as other basics. Furthermore, at the end of the château’s winding drive is a charming little bar and restaurant which has live music on a Friday evening. Also within walking distance is somewhere to hire bikes and kayaks. For a good choice of restaurants, artisan shops, lovely cafes as well as a supermarket, head to Souillac (13km), about a 15 to 20-minute drive away. Don’t miss the Friday morning market and take time to visit the lovely Abbey Sainte-Marie. Golf-lovers will appreciate the Résidence Souillac Golf & Country Club, around a 25-minute drive away. Gourmands can experience some of the region’s very best cuisine at one of the many restaurants within a short drive, ranging from rustic establishments serving regional fare to high-end cuisine at one of the nine Michelin-rated establishments nearby. Follow the Dordogne river west and you will soon reach famous villages such as Domme (20km), La Roque-Gageac (21km) and Castelnaud-la-Chapelle (27km). Visit idyllic castles such as Château de Beynac and discover beautiful gardens such as those in Eyrignac or the Jardins de Marqueyssac in Vézac. Hire canoes for a day exploring the Dordogne or have picnics by the riverside; this is the Perigord Noir at its very best. The famous town of Sarlat-la-Canéda (17km) is also within easy reach. It’s well known for its foie-gras and truffles and has a wonderful weekly market on a Saturday as well as gastronomic shops and gourmet restaurants. The historic architecture is incredible and you can spend hours exploring the narrow lanes of the old town. Saint-Amand-de-Coly (30km) to the north, classified as one of France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’, is an ideal place to visit alongside the pre-historic Lascaux caves near Montignac (35km). You are also near the border with the Lot department which is filled with yet more beautiful villages such as Gourdon (18km) with its charming honey-coloured houses and Rocamadour (38km), an amazing place to visit. Wine-lovers could even travel as far as Cahors (60km) and its vineyards which produce some of the finest wines in the world. Terms & Conditions: ? The maximum number of guests is 20, however please note that a maximum of 18 adults can be accommodated plus two children under 12 years of age. The exact number of guests must be communicated at the time of booking. An additional three beds can be requested for children as well as a cot. Air-conditioning is featured in the bedrooms only.
