The kitchen conveniently leads to the rest of the ground floor. Comfort-chic is the name of the game in the atmospheric living room, which has plenty of seating for eight. Choose from an eclectic mix of big sofas and armchairs, punctuated by trendy vintage-style accessories. The Neighbourhood Weeke Brooke is a gateway to a wealth of incredible walks, views, history and culture. It sits in an area of Devon that has its own microclimate, which makes it sunnier and drier than the western side of the moor. Your first port of call should be Chagford – a truly original market town steeped in history, boasting a rich creative culture. Just one mile away, the village is awash with beautiful old granite buildings, including the lovely church of St Michael, and unusual independent shops and galleries – try Rue Des Fontenelles for art, interiors and antiques. James Bowden & Sons famously sells everything and anything, as well as all you need for a day out on the moors. Chagford also has an Outdoor Pool - The soft water is fed direct from the River Teign, through ultra-violet filters and heated by air sourced heat pumps and solar panels. A natural swimming experience in the rolling hills of the Teign Valley. Food lovers will be spoiled for choice. Most places use local and organic ingredients, such as the traditional thatched Three Crowns Inn, the light and airy modern Old Forge café-restaurant and the quaint Birdcage café (for fabulous cream teas and cakes). Big-hitting Michelin-starred fare can be found at the nearby Gidleigh Park hotel. For eating in, head to Blacks Delicatessen for delicious home-cooked locally sourced treats and Jaded Palates for a range of exciting, unusual and great-tasting wines. Chagford isn’t your usual sleepy Devon village – it celebrates a vibrant creative culture nurtured by its famous festivals such as the Chagstock music festival, Chagford Film Festival and Chagword Literary Festival. It’s also the perfect base from which to explore Dartmoor National Park and all the area has to offer. Walking affords the chance to view breath-taking scenery of iconic granite-topped tors, stone rows and circles, clapper bridges and ancient dwellings. Or for a contrast, take in one of Dartmoor’s sparkling rivers: the beautiful River Teign meanders around the village, through Teign Gorge and on to the beauty spot of Fingle Bridge. Go wild swimming in the Salmon Leaps – a long river pool in the woods beneath Castle Drogo, which cascades into three Victorian square stone plunge pools. Finish your adventure with a drink at the Fingle Bridge Inn. The tranquil Fernworthy Reservoir is also worth a visit. Drewsteignton is another unmissable quintessential Devon village, four miles north of the cottage. It boasts a superb restaurant, The Old Inn, which has been featured in the Good Food Guide and recommended by the Michelin Guide. Finally, soak up some of Chagford’s history at Castle Drogo and discover the local legends and folklore that Dartmoor is famous for at Okehampton Castle. Grand Chapel with Views in Peaceful Devon Hills

Devon, England, GB
2 Bedrooms 6 Guests
Aug 25 - 28
$500 night

Discover the magic of Rowden Chapel, a 1905 landmark reborn as a picturesque countryside retreat. Perched in the rolling hills of North Devon, it offers sweeping views from its sunlit decking and a hand-crafted kitchen with 180° vistas. The lofty chapel hall, rich with character, invites cosy evenings before the cinema screen. Drift off in elegant bedrooms of the former schoolroom, then wake to a world of beaches, country walks, villages, and hidden gems just a short drive away. Welcome to our beautiful home, a labour of love that has evolved over the years. Built in 1905, this former chapel is full of character, history, and charm. As we continue to restore and preserve it, we’re opening our doors to families and groups who want something more unique than a typical holiday cottage. Our favourite space is the main chapel hall, with its original panelling (you can still see where the pews once stood) and antique radiators. This lofty yet cosy lounge is perfect for movie nights on the 100” projector screen, listening to music, or working at the desk with monitor and laptop stand. Tucked above a shower room is a sleep loft with a king-size bed (note: the stairs are steep and not recommended for children or those with mobility issues and used at your own risk). Beyond the original Edwardian room divider, the former Sunday school now holds two grand bedrooms with super king beds (convertible to twins on request). A modern family bathroom features both a shower and a separate bath. The handmade oak and ash kitchen offers breathtaking 180° south-facing views over fields and woodland, with Dartmoor visible on clear days. Dine at the large table for eight while enjoying the scenery. Step out onto the wrap-around deck for all-day sun, tranquil evenings under the stars, and the occasional visit from grazing cows or sheep. Outside, the small, well-kept garden has a charming water feature. Parking is available for 2–3 cars, with extra spaces nearby. Pets are welcome by prior arrangement (additional cleaning fee or deposit may apply). While the chapel is on the corner of a country lane, road noise is minimal and the pace is rural, though you might hear the odd tractor. Please note, there’s a small, seldom visited cemetery next door, visible from the bedroom windows, which is not part of our property. Within 30 minutes, explore the golden sands of Bude, the cobbled lanes of Clovelly, and the scenic cycling and walking routes of the Tarka Trail. Discover Westward Ho! for its vast beach, Hartland Peninsula for dramatic cliffs, or charming market towns like Holsworthy. Dartmoor National Park and the wild Atlantic coast both make perfect day trips from your doorstep. The local village (5 mins) has a village shop, village pub and other local amenities. Waitrose, Lidl and other supermarkets within 15 minutes drive. (Most supermarkets deliver). Come for the history, stay for the views, and leave with a little piece of the chapel’s story! Our internet is 5G. It’s pretty fast for where we are (100mbps) however being a 5G service, it does suffer with variance in speeds in peak times and bad weather. We also do get periodic power cuts. Usually they are short and you may not notice.
