There are many cultural activities as well as basketball tournaments and an indoor swimming pool. The marketplace is one of the most active in Greece, with plenty of fresh fish, pastourma, sardeles pastes and ouzo. You should make a stop at the Matis Ouzo factory in the market where it has been bottling its award-winning ouzo for a hundred years. You will also discover an array of ancient antique shops worthy of a browse. Ermou Street is full of historic, beautiful buildings where you can buy art, jewellery and hand-painted pottery. The City of Mytilini is a maze of small streets, and beyond is the ancient harbour which used to be connected to the new harbour by a canal. The old neoclassical mansions throughout the city are very impressive as are the Theophilos and Teriade Art Museum in the Varia neighbourhood. The Archaeological Museum of Mytilini is also very popular. There is a long dock separating the swimming area from the harbour which is roughly half a mile long. It is popular for a stroll or cycle ride, plus you will find people fishing there.  The 23 beaches of Lesvos are often small pebbled bays, some totally secluded even in high season. Vatera, Petra and Molyvos beaches offer excellent watersports and are organised with plenty of sun loungers and umbrellas. The stunning Vatera Beach is as long as many of the Cyclades islands themselves. Many have been used for thousands of years for rheumatism, arthritis, gynaecological and dermatological ailments as well as kidney and gallstones, neurological ailments, bronchitis and sciatica. The main locations are Efthalia, Thermes and Gera. The island’s landscape is rugged with mountains and lush forests.
