There is also an equestrian centre in one of the local villages, offering treks for all abilities which the owners can help book for you (this area is known for horses grazing on the pastures).The nearest villages are around a 10 to 15-minute drive away where you will find small grocery stores, a boulangerie for morning bread and pastries as well as a couple of restaurants. Larger supermarkets can be found towards Trèbes and Carcassonne. In the great city of Carcassonne itself you will find a range of amazing restaurants, some featuring Michelin stars, as well as wonderful markets selling fruit, vegetables, local meats, cheeses and all sorts of regional delights.The medieval Cité de Carcassonne is a UNESCO World Heritage site and attracts visitors from all over the world. Walk along the citadel’s 3km long walls, explore the narrow lanes filled with little shops, bars and restaurants and visit its museums. In July look out for the Festival de Carcassonne as well as the Bastille Day fireworks, some of the best in France. There are also many idyllic villages across the Languedoc. Visit the beautiful abbey in Lagrasse, also a great spot for summer riving swimming in L’Orbieu (or head up to nearby Ribaute where you can cool off by the little waterfalls).  The Minervois region offers spectacular landscapes, wild gorges and pretty villages such as Aigne with its wine-tasting caves and Minerve, one of France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’ with a fascinating Cathar history. There are of course many Cathar fortresses across this part of France including the famous Château de Quéribus and Château de Montségur. Limoux is home to some excellent restaurants, has a lovely weekly market on a Monday morning and hosts some great wine-festivals in the summer. Toulouse, the ‘rose-city’ is another fantastic day out with its historic sights and brilliant shops. Beach-lovers can be by the sea in an hour with the likes of Gruissan Plage just outside of Narbonne and the coastline around the Parc Naturel Régional de la Narbonnaise easily reached. Leucate Plage is an especially picturesque spot with an excellent beachside bistro serving freshly caught seafood and other delights.  Closer to home, other activities nearby include an 18-hole golf course in beautiful surroundings, tennis courts in Carcassonne as well as go-karting, a tree-top activity centre, an aquapark at a local lake as well as kayaking and canoeing on nearby rivers. Wildlife is part of the setting, with vultures overhead and lizards underfoot. It’s an excellent base for walking, with 400km of marked trails starting directly from the house, following old shepherds’ paths past traditional stone huts.The nearest airport is Carcassonne (15km) or you could fly into Perpignan, Béziers or Toulouse airports, all within a 90-minute drive. Gare de Carcassonne has train arrivals from Toulouse, Narbonne, Bordeaux, Perpignan and Marseille. A car is essential - there is ample parking in front of the villa. There are two new tennis courts that can also be used for basketball a short walk away (open 8.00 a.m. to 8.00 p.m.) as well as picturesque walks from the doorstep. It’s a lovely walk along the country lanes to the heart of the old medieval village where you will find the village shop for groceries (including good local produce and wines), a bar, an excellent hotel-restaurant (do book ahead) as well as a pizza van on a Friday night. Explore the village’s steep medieval lanes and admire wonderful vistas towards the mountains. On the hill above the village there is an atmopsheric tapas-bar which often has live music at the weekends and a Saturday morning market in the height of the summer. There are other restaurants in local villages within a short drive and large supermarkets on the edge of Carcassonne for stocking up. Indeed, it is fantastic being just a 15km drive from Carcassonne – start off in its old town, Bastide de Saint Louis, to soak up its atmospheric café terraces, wine-bars, restaurants and market which takes place on Place Carnot three mornings a week. This part of Carcassonne dates back to the 13th century – just to the north is the train station (great for day trips) and the Canal du Midi. Then there’s the medieval citadel, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of France’s most visited destinations – arrive early to explore the fascinating old lanes, visit the castle and walk along the historic ramparts. Look out for festivities and historic re-enactments, especially in the French school holidays. The annual firework display on 14th July is spectacular. History lovers may also been keen to discover some of the country’s famous Cathar castles, starting with nearby Les Quatre Châteaux de Lastours (17km) then venturing further south to Château de Montségur (82km), perhaps stopping off in the gorgeous market town of Mirepoix (53km) en route. Hire bikes to cycle along the Canal du Midi or enjoy a leisurely boat tour. Highlights along the canal include the attractive port town of Trèbes (18km) with its 17th century bridge and unique canal lock, the pretty village of Homps (41km) with its canalside restaurants and Castelnaudary (38km), home of the legendary dish, le cassoulet. As well as its wine, riverside Limoux is also loved for its Friday morning market on Place de la République, a beautiful arcaded square with shady plane trees and restaurant terraces overlooking the fountain. This is where the Limoux Carnival takes place from January to early March although there’s plenty going on during the summer months as well. Look out for the Tour de France passing through Limoux or close by! Discover canoeing and kayaking along the Aude River, lovely long walks through the countryside, cycling trails between villages and towns as well as more challenging hikes in the foothills of the Pyrenees. There’s even skiing within an hour in the winter months. Come across Cathar castles, picturesque market towns and gorgeous scenery. Limoux has its own train station with regional departures towards Carcassonne and Quillan. From the villa you can see vineyards in one direction and vistas towards Limoux’s old town in another. On a clear day you may even be able to see the peaks of the snow-capped Pyrenees. It is possible to walk into central Limoux (1.7km) as long as you don’t mind the steep hill on the way back. En route pass a highly-regarded winery where tastings can be arranged (guests also receive a discount when purchasing wine). Indeed, wine-growing is part of Limoux’s rich heritage – vines were first introduced to the region in the 5th century BC before the monks from Abbaye de Saint-Hilaire (14km) started producing the area’s famous sparkling wine in the 1500s. Blanquette de Limoux is still made using traditional methods and enjoyed across the town – sit back on a restaurant terrace overlooking the fountain on Place de la Republique and watch the world go by with a glass in hand.
