The Neighborhood
This mostly transient neighborhood, from tourist-central Plaka to more residential districts of Athens, like Neos Kosmos and Petralona, was named after a pre-World War II bed-manufacturing factory that was owned by a businessman named Koukakis. The district lies at the base of Lofos Filopappou (Filopappos Hill), also known as the Lofos Mousseon (Hill of the Muses, as legend has it that the nine Muses were buried there). The name of the hill, Filopappou was the nickname that Gauis Julius was known by. The rough translation of Filopappou means “favourite grandson of his grandfather”. Gaius Julius' grandfather was in fact the last King of Kommagene, Antiochus IV. A number of pleasant paths lead from streets at the base of Filopappos up through its pine-clad slopes, some ending at the Dora Stratou Theater or the observatory.
