Red Rocks Mountain Retreat is an off-grid, renovated stone and timber house. It is secluded on 40 acres, nestled between Cambewarra Range Nature Reserve and old growth forest, with views to the South Coast.
Red Rocks Mountain Retreat was the overall national winner of Home Design Magazine’s ‘Renovation of the Year’ Award 2024, the main kitchen, dining and living area showcases a rustic raking ceiling design featuring striking raw timber poles and beams, polished concrete floor with large windows and doorways that draw in the view and beautiful natural light. The bathroom area features invigorating open indoor and outdoor showers with a cosy, sunken outdoor bathtub to enjoy the views.
The adjoining shed is for private use only and not in use whilst guests are present.
The feature sandstone red rocks wrap around one end of the house where a flat rock landing accommodates a relaxing area to read, unwind and observe the views to the south coast.

Where will I be?
Red Rocks Mountain Retreat is positioned near the top of the Cambewarra range at an elevation of 590m and located 6.42km off Moss Vale Road along an unsealed gravel and dirt road that passes through the temperate rainforest, dry shrub and old growth forest of the Cambewarra Nature Reserve. [Please note the unsealed gravel and dirt road is OK for 2WD cars and an adventure in itself, however with a few undulations, we do not recommend very low clearance cars.]
Red Rocks Retreat is one on the most secluded properties in the Kangaroo Valley region, with regular sighting of echidnas, abundance of bird life and endangered rock wallabies.
From this secluded mountain location you are amongst nature, with stunning views, relaxing hikes to amazing lookouts and mountain biking throughout the mountain range. Yet, you are still close to it all with short drives to Kangaroo Valley township located within 20 mins, Berry and the South Coast, a 30-35 min from the property.
Red Rocks Trig Point lookout is a comfortable 2.4km hike/walk from Red Rocks Mountain Retreat with sensational views over Kangaroo Valley. This trail/lookout is great for twitching, hiking, and walking, and it’s unlikely you’ll encounter many other people while exploring. The trails and lookout are open year-round and is spectacular to visit at sunset.

How is the property laid out?
Large open plan kitchen, living area with high raking ceilings and exposed timber post and beams that were originally milled from the property. The two bedrooms, bathroom and separate toilet lead off the main room.
All windows and doorways are double glazed to enhance the thermal comfort during both winter and summer. Slow combustion fireplace in the main living area and underfloor heating in the bathroom and toilet areas.
The upstairs level is a future loft style bedroom where the future master bedroom will be located.
WiFi, Internet, Netflix, or Pay TV - will I have it?
Complimentary WiFi and Netflix are available and a password will be provided in your pre-arrival email. Please note that neither Property Manager nor the owner can guarantee 100% that WiFi will work, and no compensation will be payable if problematic. If Wi-Fi is important, please therefore always have a backup plan.
Please note that there is no free to air TV, however commercial channels can be viewed using the apps on the TV. Streaming services are also available. Please bring your own login details to access streaming services.
What about outdoors?
Red Rocks Mountain Retreat is set on 40 acres and as it is a rural property, backing onto Cambewarra Nature Reserve. Always take care with wildlife or other dangers, please. Once you settle in, your hosts have a list of all the local attractions – those in walking distance and shorts drives.
Red Rocks Mountain Retreat has a southeast facing deck area, outdoor shower and sunken bath overlooking the south coast in the distance. To the east, is the BBQ outdoor eating area, large sandstone rocks and fire pit to relax around. To the north, another cosy fire pit surrounded by lawn.
Outside is has 2 firepit areas. Some wood is provided.
Stay warm or keeping cool?
Red Rocks Mountain Retreat is an off-grid, passive heating and cooling retreat for all year-round comfort. Inside there is a reverse cycle air conditioning unit in the living area, as well as a wet-back slow combustion fireplace which not only provides you with the comfort of a fire, but doubles up as an oven and hot water for the radiators. The insulated double-glazed windows and doors keep the house warm in winter and cool in summer. Solar powered electricity provides for the under-floor heating in the bathroom and toilet.
Cooling options include the air conditioning in the living area, opening up the extensive windows and doors for cross ventilation to catch the breeze and ceiling fans are in the bedrooms.
What about sheets, towels and other supplies?
Red Rocks Retreat supplies high quality linen and bath towels.
Parking for cars, etc?
Red Rocks Mountain Retreat open air parking with plenty of parking area. Once you drive 6.42km down to the property, the turn off is on your left, there is a gate.
Is my dog or cat also welcome to stay?
Dogs are considered on application. Strictly no cats. All faeces to be collected. The retreat is nestled into the forest where there are many endangered species such as elusive greater gliders, quolls and rock wallabies. Our hope is that you respect and protect the wildlife.
Wildlife
Please note that due to the nature and location of this property, wildlife may be about including possums, kangaroos, ants, spiders, bees, wasps and even snakes. We do whatever we can to keep the property safe, however we cannot guarantee that you will not see any wildlife at the property. You must book the property knowing that the possibility of encountering wildlife exists, and you must take care during your visit if walking around the property.
What are the minimum stay rules?
- Summer Season: Between 2 and 3 nights, depending on the property
- Easter: 4 nights
- Long Weekends: 3 nights
- All other times: 2 nights
Are there any special Summer Season rules?
Please note that during Summer Season, our properties may have designated changeover days so as to make the cleaning rosters manageable. We also do not schedule arrivals on the Christmas, Boxing, and New Years Day public holidays.
