About the area
Thermal, California, may not be as widely recognized as some of the Golden State's more famous destinations, but it offers a unique charm that can be quite appealing to those looking for an off-the-beaten-path experience. Located in the Coachella Valley, Thermal is surrounded by stunning desert landscapes and is imbued with a rich agricultural heritage.
One of the main attractions in Thermal is the Coachella Valley History Museum, where visitors can learn about the area's past, including its Native American roots and the development of the local agriculture industry. The museum is set in a charming historical campus that includes a 1909 schoolhouse and a variety of antique farming equipment.
For those interested in aviation, the Jacqueline Cochran Regional Airport in Thermal is home to the annual Jacqueline Cochran Air Show. This event showcases a variety of aircraft, from vintage planes to modern military jets, and includes thrilling aerobatic displays.
Thermal is also in close proximity to the famous Coachella Valley Preserve, a natural oasis that offers hiking trails through the Thousand Palms Oasis Preserve. Here, visitors can explore the lush palm woodlands and desert wetlands, which are home to a variety of wildlife, including the endangered Coachella Valley fringe-toed lizard.
The region is also known for its equestrian facilities, attracting horse enthusiasts from all over. The HITS Coachella Desert Circuit is a premier hunter/jumper horse show that takes place in Thermal, drawing competitors and spectators alike.
For those who enjoy motorsports, the nearby BMW Performance Center West offers driving experiences that allow visitors to test their skills behind the wheel of a BMW on a closed course under professional instruction.
Agriculture remains a vital part of Thermal's identity, and visitors can experience this firsthand by visiting local farms and date palm groves, some of which offer tours and tastings of the locally grown produce, including the renowned Coachella Valley dates.
While Thermal may not have the glitz and glamour of nearby Palm Springs, it offers a quiet retreat with a focus on nature, history, and unique local experiences. It's a place where travelers can enjoy the serene beauty of the desert, delve into the region's agricultural roots, and engage in outdoor activities that make the most of the sunny California climate.
