Villa Palmento is a beautifully restored former winery nestled on a hillside in south-east Sicily. Villa Palmento is within easy reach of the historic hill town of Caltagirone and just a 45-minute drive from long, sandy beaches. It is also an excellent base for discovering the delights of this corner of Sicily The property is set in an impressive 24 acres of enclosed grounds, giving you absolute privacy and space to unwind and enjoy the natural setting. Explore the grounds on foot or mountain bike, following pathways through olive, fruit, eucalyptus and pine trees. From here, there are unspoilt views which extend over the Sicilian countryside dotted with prickly pears, agaves and yuccas. On a clear day, you can even see the sea – it is a magical place. A terrace backed with fragrant lavender and rosemary is for gathering together. Lie back on the outdoor sofas or sit around a large, shaded dining table while you enjoy fresh local produce cooked on the fabulous barbecue. Luxuriate in your cooling infinity pool with its unique waterfall or enjoy a glass of wine under the pool pergola, on the lawn or under the centennial olive tree – you are spoilt for choice. On your doorstep is the colourful town of Caltagirone, famous for its painted ceramics but also where you will find shops, restaurants, historic buildings and a beautiful historic tiled staircase. Within an hour by car are fascinating sites to discover from UNESCO protected baroque towns, to nature reserves and sandy beaches. Inside, the villa feels light-filled and inviting, with its neutral colour palette and excellent quality contemporary furnishings. The sitting room at the heart of the villa overlooks the pool, with large linen sofas, a Bose music player and satellite TV. A dining room connects to a well-equipped kitchen and through to the outside dining area. The bedrooms have all been thoughtfully designed, each with an en-suite bathroom and a distinctive style, including a bed made from old barrels from the winery. Sleeping up to nine, there are two double bedrooms in the main house – the master suite and a double with a single bed. The ‘salotto del vino’ is the third bedroom in the heart of the winery where the grapes used to be crushed to make wine. The fourth is a modern annexe, just a short walk from the main villa. Staff are on hand to make your stay as relaxing as possible. The maid service is daily, and extras can be arranged from laundry, ironing, and shopping to a private chef and babysitting.
