The star day trip is Arezzo (20-minute drive), one of Tuscany’s great underrated cities, a short drive south: climb to the sloping Piazza Grande, seek out Piero della Francesca’s Legend of the True Cross frescoes in the Basilica of San Francesco, and time your visit for the antiques fair that fills the streets on the first weekend of each month. To the north, the Casentino valley unfolds with castles and the ancient forests of a national park.
