About the area
Key Largo, the first of the Florida Keys, is a paradise for those seeking a tropical escape with a laid-back vibe. Known as the "Diving Capital of the World," Key Largo boasts some of the most fascinating underwater sights in the United States, making it a magnet for divers and snorkelers from around the globe.
The John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, the first undersea park in the U.S., offers visitors the chance to explore vibrant coral reefs teeming with marine life. Glass-bottom boat tours provide a glimpse into this underwater wonderland for those who prefer to stay dry. The park also offers kayaking and canoeing through mangrove swamps, adding to the array of eco-adventures available.
Key Largo is also home to the famous Christ of the Abyss statue, an underwater bronze sculpture that has become a must-see for divers. Nearby, the Spiegel Grove shipwreck, a 510-foot Navy ship intentionally sunk to create an artificial reef, offers an exciting dive experience for advanced divers.
Above water, Key Largo's natural beauty continues to enchant. The island is surrounded by lush tropical foliage, and visitors can enjoy the serene environment through nature trails and wildlife sanctuaries. The Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park is a prime spot for bird-watching and discovering rare plants and animals unique to the Keys.
For a touch of history and mystery, the African Queen, the original steamboat from the classic 1951 movie, offers canal cruises that transport guests back in time. The boat's storied past adds a layer of nostalgia to the already charming atmosphere of Key Largo.
The island's dining scene reflects its coastal location, with fresh seafood available at every turn. Waterfront restaurants serve up the catch of the day alongside stunning views, allowing diners to savor the flavors of the Keys while watching the sun dip below the horizon.
Accommodations in Key Largo range from cozy bed and breakfasts to luxury resorts, catering to all preferences and budgets. Many properties offer private beaches and docks, giving guests direct access to the crystal-clear waters that make the Keys so famous.
In essence, Key Largo is a destination that offers both adventure and relaxation. Its underwater splendors, natural beauty, and easygoing atmosphere make it a perfect getaway for travelers looking to unwind and explore the unique treasures of the Florida Keys.
