Home details
Domaine de la Rive rests along the banks of the Adour River as a sanctuary of heritage, harmony and hospitality. This family-owned estate, lovingly held for four generations, brings together two distinctive residences to form one unforgettable retreat near the edge of the small historic city of Bayonne.
The first part of the estate is a traditional 19th century Basque home that radiates poetic charm, with five individually styled bedrooms inspired by local mythology and global cultures, sleeping up to 10 guests. Each room features a king-size double bed that can be configured as twins, along with its own en suite bath or shower room. Downstairs, cool tiled floors run through the inviting living spaces, where a characterful kitchen blends rustic charm with modern practicality. Outside, the south-facing stone terrace offers an idyllic setting for leisurely al-fresco meals. Outside of high season, it is possible to book this part of the property by itself (see the 10-person rate).
Just beside, a beautifully converted barn adjoining the house offers a bright, contemporary contrast for 11 guests, drawing on nature for its design inspiration. Here, another five welcoming bedrooms (and three bathrooms, two of which are en suite) provide comfort and flexibility, while the open-plan living space is the social heart of the home. French doors open onto a raised decked terrace overlooking the gardens and swimming pool, inviting guests to slow down and soak up the surroundings. Outside of high season, it is possible to book just two en suite bedrooms in this wing, alongside the traditional Basque house (see the 14-person rate).
Set within 2.5 hectares of private parkland, days unfold between refreshing swims, tennis matches and games of pétanque. Families can enjoy the space with a range of outdoor games or simply wander the grounds where the wild edges meet forest trails and river views.
Just outside the cultural hub of Bayonne, the estate is ideally placed to explore the coast, city and countryside. From the beaches of Anglet to Biarritz’s lively streets and the traditions of Basque villages, the region is rich in culture and character. Domaine de la Rive offers a setting where memories are rooted in nature, story and time spent together.

About the area
Bayonne, a charming city nestled in the heart of France's Basque Country, is a destination that offers a delightful blend of history, culture, and gastronomy. This picturesque city, with the Nive and Adour rivers running through it, is renowned for its vibrant festivals, stunning architecture, and rich culinary traditions.
One of the city's most iconic events is the Fêtes de Bayonne, a summer festival that transforms the streets into a sea of red and white as locals and visitors alike celebrate with music, dance, and bullfighting exhibitions. The festival's convivial atmosphere is a testament to the city's lively spirit and is a must-experience for those visiting in late July.
Bayonne's historical significance is evident in its well-preserved medieval architecture. The impressive Gothic Cathedral of Sainte-Marie, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, towers over the city and is a marvel of religious art and history. The cloister next to the cathedral offers a peaceful respite and a chance to admire the intricate stonework up close.
The city's fortifications, designed by the famed military architect Vauban, are another highlight. Visitors can stroll along the ramparts and bastions, taking in panoramic views of the city and the surrounding countryside. The Bayonne Castle, although not open to the public, adds to the city's historical charm and is a striking sight from various vantage points.
Bayonne is also a paradise for food lovers. It is particularly famous for its chocolate, with a history of chocolate making that dates back to the 17th century. The Bayonne Ham, a delicately cured and seasoned delicacy, is another gastronomic treasure that visitors can savor in the city's markets and restaurants. The local cuisine reflects the fusion of French and Basque culinary traditions, offering a range of flavors to delight the palate.
Art and culture are deeply ingrained in Bayonne's identity. The Basque Museum provides an in-depth look at the region's cultural heritage, from traditional costumes to contemporary art. The Bonnat-Helleu Museum, currently undergoing renovations, houses an impressive collection of fine arts, including works by European masters.
For those seeking a more active experience, the rivers provide opportunities for water sports, while the nearby Basque countryside offers hiking and cycling routes. The city's proximity to the Atlantic coast also means that the beaches and surf spots of Biarritz and Anglet are just a short drive away.
In essence, Bayonne is a city that captivates with its rich tapestry of cultural festivities, historical landmarks, and culinary delights. It's a destination that offers a taste of the Basque way of life and leaves visitors with lasting memories of its warm hospitality and vibrant character.
