Location:
Baska Voda is a small, pretty village just 9km north of Markarska and just south of Brela. It is an easy day trip to Split and a wonderful holiday destination. Once a humble fishing village, Baska Voda’s beaches, pine woods and lovely setting have made it a favourite for seaside tourism. Baska Voda took shape when groups of people began coming down from the highlands to the sea looking for freshwater (baska voda).
Those that like hiking should definitely discover the Biokovo Mountain. It is incredible. By far it is the greatest sight of the Central Dalmatian coastline. You will see stunning scenery, wild horses and goats, the remains of old settlements, alpine plants, forests and wildflowers in the Biokovo Nature Park. You could also hire a bike or scooter so that you can see more.
The nearby villages of Bast and Topici, known for their artisanal cheese, proscuitto and bread are worth a visit. You should also take a stroll along the promenasde and look at the little fishermen’s houses in Bratus. You may well see them fixing their nets!
The beautiful Markarska Riviera stretches between Brela and Gradac with beautiful beaches, pine trees, the glistening turquoise sea and lovely quiet bays. You can book so many trips out to the islands of Brac and Hvar or simply to play in the sea. Markarska town is the heart of nightlife and eating out in this area. Some typical dishes of the Markarska region are the superb Bikovo cheese and ‘Kastradina’ which is a stew made with dried and smoked lamb, mutton or goat meat.
Similar to Split’s ‘Riva’ promenade, it has a lovely palm-lined promenade with fashionable cafes, bars and boutiques and you will see small yachts in the harbour. There is a small museum in the town where you can find out about local history and culture.
