About the area
To reach Somerset, Kentucky, visitors have the option of either driving or flying. The nearest significant airport is Blue Grass Airport in Lexington, approximately 85 miles north of Somerset. Upon arrival at the airport, car rental services are available for the journey to Somerset. Once within the city, a car is recommended for getting around due to limited public transportation options. However, a local bus service known as the Rural Transit Enterprise Coordinated (RTEC) does operate within the city and its surrounding counties.
Somerset's layout and lack of pedestrian-friendly infrastructure in certain areas make it less suitable for walking. Nevertheless, there are numerous parks and recreational areas where walking or hiking can be enjoyed.
Lake Cumberland - one of the world's largest man-made lakes - is situated nearby for those who enjoy boating or fishing. Another scenic spot worth visiting is 76 Falls which offers opportunities for boating and sightseeing.
Within Somerset itself, attractions include SomerSplash Waterpark which provides family fun during warmer months and Mill Springs Battlefield Museum that offers a glimpse into Civil War history.
For food lovers, downtown Somerset boasts a variety of dining options ranging from traditional American dishes to international cuisine. The town also hosts several annual festivals such as Master Musicians Festival and Somernites Cruise car show which draw many visitors.
In conclusion, while Somerset may not be as walkable as some cities due to its spread-out nature and limited pedestrian-friendly infrastructure in some areas, it presents an interesting mix of historical attractions, outdoor activities and cultural events that make it worth visiting.
