About the area
Cudjoe Key, nestled in the lower Florida Keys, is a tranquil and picturesque destination that offers a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. This small island, part of the chain of tropical islands stretching about 120 miles off the state's southern tip, is a paradise for those seeking relaxation, natural beauty, and a touch of adventure.
One of the key attractions of Cudjoe Key is its proximity to some of the most stunning coral reefs in the United States, making it a premier spot for snorkeling and scuba diving. The clear, warm waters of the Florida Keys are home to an abundant array of marine life, including colorful fish, sea turtles, and dolphins. Divers can explore the underwater world and discover shipwrecks and vibrant coral formations.
For those who prefer to stay above water, Cudjoe Key offers excellent opportunities for fishing, kayaking, and paddleboarding. The backcountry waters are teeming with sport fish, and the calm, shallow waters provide a perfect environment for paddling adventures through mangrove tunnels and along quiet shorelines.
Nature enthusiasts will appreciate the island's laid-back atmosphere and its access to the National Key Deer Refuge on nearby Big Pine Key, where the diminutive and endangered Key deer can be spotted. Birdwatchers will also find the area a haven for observing a variety of migratory and local bird species.
Cudjoe Key's location is ideal for day trips to other islands in the Florida Keys. It's a short drive to Key West, the southernmost point in the continental United States, known for its historic homes, lively Duval Street, and stunning sunsets at Mallory Square. Visitors can also take a trip to Marathon to visit the Turtle Hospital and learn about sea turtle rehabilitation and conservation.
Accommodations on Cudjoe Key range from cozy vacation rentals to waterfront properties, offering visitors a chance to unwind in a peaceful setting with breathtaking views of the ocean. The island's dining scene, while modest, includes charming seafood eateries where you can savor fresh catches and local flavors.
In essence, Cudjoe Key is a destination that offers a blend of relaxation, natural beauty, and outdoor activities. It's a place where time slows down, and the beauty of the Florida Keys can be enjoyed at a leisurely pace. Whether you're looking to dive into the underwater world, cast a line in the backcountry waters, or simply soak up the sun on a quiet beach, Cudjoe Key is a gem waiting to be discovered.
