About the area
Severance, Colorado, may not be as well-known as some of the state's larger cities, but it offers a charming slice of small-town Americana with a unique twist that makes it a delightful stop for travelers exploring the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains.
One of the most quirky and endearing attractions in Severance is the town's claim to fame as the "Home of the Rocky Mountain Oyster." For the uninitiated, Rocky Mountain oysters are a regional delicacy made from bull testicles, and they can be sampled at Bruce's Bar, a local institution that has embraced this unusual dish with gusto. The bar's motto, "Where the geese fly and the bulls cry," hints at the tongue-in-cheek humor visitors can expect to find.
Beyond its culinary curiosities, Severance is surrounded by the natural beauty typical of Northern Colorado. The town is a stone's throw away from the Pawnee National Grassland, offering opportunities for bird watching, hiking, and experiencing the vast open spaces and big skies that define the region. The grassland is particularly known for its birding opportunities, with the spring and fall migrations bringing a variety of species through the area.
For those interested in water activities, Severance is near several reservoirs, including Windsor Reservoir and the larger Horsetooth Reservoir to the west. These bodies of water provide excellent spots for fishing, boating, and picnicking during the warmer months.
The town also serves as a peaceful base for exploring the more bustling nearby cities of Fort Collins, Loveland, and Greeley, each with their own attractions, breweries, and cultural events. Fort Collins, in particular, is renowned for its vibrant Old Town, craft beer scene, and proximity to the Cache la Poudre River, which offers white-water rafting and scenic drives.
Severance's community events, such as the annual Severance Days festival, showcase the town's friendly atmosphere and local pride. These gatherings often feature parades, live music, and family-friendly activities that welcome both residents and visitors alike.
In essence, Severance is a destination that offers a quirky taste of Colorado's culinary traditions, easy access to the state's natural wonders, and a quiet, community-oriented atmosphere. It's a place where travelers can slow down, enjoy the simpler pleasures, and perhaps even dare to try a bite of the local specialty.
