About the area
Cortez, Florida, is a charming fishing village that offers a delightful escape into Old Florida's maritime heritage and natural beauty. This quaint coastal enclave, nestled on the northern edge of Sarasota Bay, provides a serene atmosphere away from the hustle and bustle of Florida's more tourist-heavy destinations.
One of the main attractions in Cortez is its rich fishing history, which is celebrated at the Florida Maritime Museum. Housed in a 1912 schoolhouse, the museum showcases the village's legacy as one of the last remaining fishing villages on Florida's Gulf Coast. Visitors can learn about traditional fishing techniques, the area's marine life, and the importance of the fishing industry to Cortez's development.
For those who love the water, Cortez offers access to pristine beaches, clear waters, and an abundance of marine life. The village serves as a gateway to Anna Maria Island, with its beautiful white-sand beaches and laid-back island vibe. Boating and fishing are popular activities, with local charters available for those eager to catch a glimpse of dolphins or reel in the catch of the day.
The natural beauty of the area can be further explored at the nearby Robinson Preserve, where visitors can hike, bike, or kayak through mangrove forests, tidal marshes, and nature trails. Birdwatchers will be particularly enchanted by the variety of species that call this preserve home.
Cortez's dining scene is a reflection of its maritime roots, with several waterfront restaurants serving up fresh seafood straight from the local waters. The Star Fish Company Market & Restaurant, for example, offers a dockside experience where diners can enjoy their meal while watching the boats come and go.
The village also hosts the annual Cortez Commercial Fishing Festival, a celebration of its fishing heritage with live music, nautical arts and crafts, and, of course, plenty of fresh seafood. This event draws visitors from all over, eager to partake in the authentic Cortez experience.
In essence, Cortez, Florida, is a destination that captivates with its simplicity and authenticity. It's a place where time seems to slow down, allowing visitors to savor the pleasures of coastal living, from the fresh catch of the day to the stunning sunsets over the bay. Whether you're a history enthusiast, nature lover, or simply seeking a peaceful retreat, Cortez offers a slice of Florida that is both timeless and enchanting.
