Sardinia’s western coast is less developed than the better-known Costa Smeralda and there are some beautiful beaches just 15 minutes from the house, including the unspoiled Spiaggia di Maria Pia (15 minutes) or La Baia dei Venti just next door. Alghero (10 minutes) is a fascinating collection of architecture, from the ancient walls that encircle the city, to the gothic cathedral. A day wandering through its cobbled streets is a rewarding experience, especially if it involves lunch at one of the many, delicious, local restaurants. For the best and freshest local produce, a trip to the central market is very worthwhile. The nature reserve at Porto Conte (30 minutes) offers hiking routes for all ages and abilities, through unspoiled coastal landscapes, as well as stunning snorkelling. Alghero airport is just 20 minutes away.
