The Neighborhood

Situated on the doorstep of the North York Moors National Park, Pickering is a picturesque market town steeped in history, brimming with scenic charm and traditional English appeal. Often called the 'Gateway to the Moors', this lively town combines rich heritage, vibrant local culture, and a wealth of outdoor activities, making it an ideal destination for those seeking both relaxation and adventure. With a history that stretches back centuries, Pickering is home to landmarks such as the 12th-century Pickering Castle, where visitors can enjoy sweeping views of the surrounding countryside. St. Peter and St. Paul’s Church, renowned for its rare medieval wall paintings, offers a fascinating glimpse into the town's past. Pickering also serves as the starting point for the famous North Yorkshire Moors Railway, a heritage steam train journey that takes passengers through some of the most stunning landscapes in the region, all the way to the coast at Whitby. It's a nostalgic experience that brings England’s railway heritage to life. The town centre is a charming blend of historic stone buildings, independent shops, and lively local markets where visitors can find fresh produce, handmade crafts, and distinctive souvenirs. Cosy tearooms, traditional pubs, and a wide range of restaurants serve delicious Yorkshire fare, often made with locally sourced ingredients. Nature enthusiasts will feel at home in Pickering, as the town provides easy access to the vast North York Moors National Park, where hiking, cycling, and wildlife watching are popular pastimes. A short drive away, Dalby Forest offers a range of activities, from mountain biking and zip-lining to family-friendly walks and scenic picnics. Pickering is also known for its welcoming, tight-knit community, with locals eager to share their knowledge of the area. The town hosts a variety of annual events, including the popular 1940s Wartime Weekend and the Pickering Traction Engine Rally, which celebrate the town’s cultural heritage and offer visitors unique, memorable experiences. Whether you’re here to explore its historic sites, enjoy the natural beauty, or simply relax and take in the charm of this delightful market town, Pickering offers something for everyone. With its perfect mix of history, scenery, and outdoor adventure, it’s an excellent base for discovering the best of North Yorkshire and the Moors.
