Welcome to the Cypress Log Cabin Home, a piece of history nestled on the shores of Lake Michigan in the heart of the stunning Indiana Dunes National Park. This iconic cabin, originally constructed for the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair as part of the "Century of Progress" homes exhibit, offers an unparalleled blend of historic charm and modern comforts, making it the perfect retreat for nature lovers, history buffs, and anyone seeking a unique getaway.
About the Home
The Cypress Log Cabin Home is a beautifully preserved example of early 20th-century architecture, crafted entirely from cypress logs. As you step inside, you’ll be greeted by the warm, inviting ambiance of the living space, featuring exposed log walls and carefully curated furnishings. The original exterior porch has been transformed into an incredible glass sitting room, with epic Lake Michigan views. This part of the home features the original cabin bedroom, used by the World’s Fair caretakers, with two built-in twin beds. The cabin’s original kitchen has been converted to a full bathroom just outside the bedroom. This home offers a whole-house sound system which can be controlled by downloading the Russound app.
Step through the hall to the log cabin addition to find a gorgeous, long galley kitchen, dining room, full bathroom with shower, and two more bedrooms:
The primary bedroom, featuring a king bed and a twin daybed & twin trundle with an ensuite full bathroom with jetted soaking tub (no shower).
The third bedroom features two queen beds with a private screened in porch.
Downstairs, a world of entertainment awaits. With a full wet bar, wine cellar, living room with vintage pinball and skeeball machines, full bathroom with walk-in shower, and a movie theater, you’ll have plenty to do on rainy days with the family. The movie theater also offers a hidden queen bed for additional optional sleeping space. This home sleeps a maximum of 12 guests.
Outdoor Paradise
Step outside to experience the natural beauty of Indiana Dunes National Park right at your doorstep. This home is the only lodging within the bounds of the National Park. The cabin is set on a serene, wooded, dune-top lot, offering distant views of the Chicago skyline as well as privacy and tranquility. Walk across the street to the wide, sandy beach to collect beach glass or lounge in the sun. Spend your days exploring the park’s diverse ecosystems, from sandy beaches and towering dunes to lush forests and serene wetlands. After a day of adventure, unwind on the patio with a glass of wine, or gather around the gas fire pit for an evening under the stars.
Additional Notes
As this home is a culturally significant historic site, and an Indiana Landmark, there are often visitors taking photos at the bottom of the road near the historic marker. The home is set back from the road and gated for privacy.
This area is monitored by the National Park Service, and uniformed rangers are often patrolling the area.
Though the garage is not accessible to guests, parking for up to 6 cars is provided at the home.
The historic fireplace is beautiful, but not operational. Propane gas is provided for the firepit outside.
Complimentary wi-fi is provided. Cell service in the area may or may not work strongly, depending on your carrier.
A National Park visitor’s pass is required when exploring the National Park outside the property lines of the home, and can be purchased through our office, or the National Park app.
Don’t miss the chance to stay in this one-of-a-kind vacation residence, the exclusive lodging option within Indiana Dunes National Park. Whether you’re seeking a peaceful retreat or an adventurous getaway, the Cypress Log Cabin Home offers an unforgettable experience in one of the Midwest’s most beautiful natural settings.
