About the area
Calp, Spain, is a captivating coastal town that beckons travelers with its blend of historic charm, natural beauty, and modern amenities. Nestled on the Costa Blanca in the province of Alicante, Calp is renowned for its iconic rock formation, the Peñón de Ifach, which dramatically juts out into the Mediterranean Sea and offers panoramic views for those who hike to its summit.
The town's two main beaches, Arenal-Bol and La Fossa, are expansive stretches of golden sand that are perfect for sunbathing, swimming, and enjoying a variety of water sports. The promenades behind these beaches are lined with a wide array of restaurants and cafes, where visitors can indulge in local seafood dishes while taking in the seaside ambiance.
Calp's old town is a delightful area to explore, with narrow cobblestone streets, colorful buildings, and remnants of ancient walls and fortifications. The town's historic quarter also hosts the Torreó de la Peça, a defense tower that now serves as a museum, and the Iglesia Antigua, a church that showcases a mix of Gothic and Baroque architectural styles.
For those interested in archaeology and history, the Roman site Baños de la Reina, located just by the sea, offers a glimpse into the past with its ancient fish farms and baths. The town's weekly market is another cultural highlight, where visitors can browse through local crafts, fresh produce, and regional specialties.
Calp's marina is a hub of activity, where yachts and fishing boats come and go, and where travelers can embark on sailing trips or boat tours to explore the coastline. The natural park surrounding the Peñón de Ifach is a haven for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts, with its diverse flora and fauna, including rare bird species.
The town also hosts a variety of festivals throughout the year, including the colorful Moros y Cristianos parade, which celebrates the historical battles between Moors and Christians with elaborate costumes and reenactments.
With its pleasant Mediterranean climate, Calp is an ideal destination year-round. Whether visitors are looking for relaxation on the beach, adventurous outdoor activities, cultural experiences, or simply a taste of Spanish coastal living, Calp offers a memorable escape that caters to all types of travelers.
