About the area
Keystone, South Dakota, is a small town with a monumental reputation, serving as the gateway to the iconic Mount Rushmore National Memorial. This colossal sculpture, featuring the faces of four U.S. presidents, is a symbol of American history and ingenuity, attracting millions of visitors each year. The memorial's grandeur and the surrounding Black Hills National Forest provide a stunning backdrop for both education and adventure.
Beyond Mount Rushmore, Keystone is a stone's throw away from other natural and historical attractions. The Crazy Horse Memorial, still under construction, is set to be the world's largest mountain carving and pays homage to the Native American heritage of the region. Visitors can learn about the rich culture of the Lakota people and see the progress of this monumental artwork.
For those seeking subterranean wonders, Jewel Cave National Monument and Wind Cave National Park offer guided tours through some of the longest and most complex cave systems in the world. These caves boast unique formations and are home to diverse ecosystems, making them a must-visit for nature enthusiasts and spelunkers alike.
The town of Keystone itself, while small, is rich with Wild West history. It was once a mining town, and remnants of this past can be explored at the Big Thunder Gold Mine, where visitors can try their hand at gold panning. The historic boardwalk is lined with shops, restaurants, and attractions that provide a glimpse into the town's gold rush heritage.
Outdoor activities abound in the surrounding Black Hills. Hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding trails crisscross the landscape, offering breathtaking views and encounters with local wildlife. The nearby Custer State Park is renowned for its scenic drives, such as the Needles Highway, and for its herd of free-roaming bison.
In the winter months, the area transforms into a snowy wonderland, with opportunities for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling. The colder weather doesn't diminish the beauty of the Black Hills; rather, it adds a serene, white blanket that makes the region's natural beauty stand out in a different light.
Keystone's blend of monumental history, cultural significance, and natural beauty makes it a destination that offers something for every traveler. Whether you're looking to immerse yourself in the story of America, explore the great outdoors, or simply enjoy the charm of a small town, Keystone is a place where memories are made and adventures are waiting around every corner.
