About the area
Ambleside, nestled at the head of Windermere, England's largest natural lake, is a charming town that serves as a gateway to the scenic beauty and outdoor adventures of the Lake District National Park. This picturesque town is a magnet for walkers, climbers, and nature lovers, offering easy access to some of the region's most stunning landscapes and a plethora of outdoor activities.
The town itself is steeped in history, with a delightful blend of stone cottages, quaint shops, and traditional pubs. The Bridge House, one of Ambleside's most iconic structures, is a tiny 17th-century building that once served as an apple store and is now a National Trust property. Visitors can also explore the remains of a Roman fort, Galava, which dates back to the 2nd century AD.
For literary enthusiasts, Ambleside is closely associated with the poet William Wordsworth, who lived just a few miles away in Grasmere. His former home, Dove Cottage, is now a museum dedicated to his life and work. The Armitt Museum and Library offers further insight into the cultural heritage of the Lake District, with collections related to Wordsworth, Beatrix Potter, and other notable figures.
Outdoor pursuits are abundant in Ambleside, with numerous trails leading into the fells and surrounding countryside. Hikers can tackle the Fairfield Horseshoe, a challenging circular route that offers panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and valleys. For a more leisurely experience, a walk to Stock Ghyll Force, a spectacular 70-foot waterfall, is highly recommended.
Water-based activities on Windermere are also a major draw. Visitors can enjoy boat cruises, kayaking, paddleboarding, and sailing, taking in the serene beauty of the lake and its wooded shores. The Windermere Lake Cruises offer a relaxing way to see the lake and connect to other popular destinations like Bowness-on-Windermere and Lakeside.
Ambleside's culinary scene is a delight, with cozy cafes, traditional inns, and fine dining restaurants serving up local Cumbrian specialties and international cuisine. The town also hosts a variety of shops selling outdoor gear, local crafts, and regional products like the famous Kendal Mint Cake.
With its combination of natural beauty, cultural attractions, and outdoor adventures, Ambleside is a destination that offers something for everyone. Whether seeking a peaceful retreat or an active holiday, visitors will find this Lake District town to be a perfect base for exploring one of England's most beloved landscapes.
