Tucked away off vibrant Bermondsey Street, the top floor of this 1900s warehouse has been converted into a penthouse apartment that offers a unique sensory experience and a convenient home-away-from-home in the heart of London.
With soaring, double-height ceilings, and large windows that look over the rooftops on both sides, this third-floor apartment gives a wonderful sense of space and basks in sunshine from dawn to dusk. The building’s heritage as a former chamois leather factory many decades ago is celebrated: the exposed brick and beam, and the original winch that would have hoisted the leathers up to the third floor – all combine to give this home an undeniable warmth, style and wow factor.
Well-appointed, the apartment offers a large, zoned, open-plan area. The lounge features luxurious sofas in purple velvet and cream suede, with a faux rabbit carpet that evokes the feeling of walking on moss. A shaker-style kitchen with modern facilities is oriented to let you watch the clouds scuttle by as you make a cup of English tea. A zinc-topped breakfast bar and industrial stools provide a perch for light meals – open the loading bay windows and eat al fresco, inside!
A large, oak, dining room table with space to seat eight sits against the dramatic backdrop of an iconic Vivian Westwood mural of the Union Jack flag in vintage red, white and blue. A grand piano makes an elegant statement, and hides a little nook with a comfy armchair in sumptuous chocolate-coloured leather – perfect for reading a book in the warm glow of the late afternoon sunshine. And there are books a-plenty, which guests are welcome to peruse. Artwork also abounds with a focus on the organic, which reflects the owner’s love of nature – and brings the outdoors into this cool urban setting. The lower level is completed with a dramatic guest bathroom that cocoons you in shimmering copper ‘riverbed’ tiles and a walk-in rain shower. Outside, there is a balcony with a table and chairs for two.
Up the wide wooden staircase is the principal bedroom, with a super king-sized bed and a vintage Sottini rain bath so you can shower or bathe in the treetops, looking up to The Shard. A second terrace lets you take a moment to round out your day by gazing at the glow of the city’s most famous skyscrapers on the skyline beyond a sea of chimneys. Hello, London.
Finally, this apartment is a super cosy and tranquil base, perfect for exploring the capital. With art, eateries and green parks on the doorstep, and major London attractions such as Tower Bridge, The Shard, Borough Market and Tate Modern within easy walking distance, this property will give you a haven right at the heart of things.
