From the swimming pool you can catch a glimpse of the beautiful château in Les Baux-de-Provence. It takes just under ten minutes to drive to the incredible village, one of France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’, where you can wander around the narrow medieval lanes, discovering shops and restaurants, then explore the ruins of the château with its amazing views across the region. It’s a stunning place to visit – get there early in the morning before visitors arrive from across Provence.
It’s also a short drive to Maussane-les-Alpilles, a charming village known for its olive oil production. This village has some excellent restaurants and picturesque cafes as well as a good selection of shops, some selling local produce, and a supermarket. It’s a pleasant place to stop for a leisurely lunch or meal out in the evening with restaurants in and around Maussane ranging from good pizzerias to Michelin starred establishments.
The Alpilles Natural Park is filled with enchanting landscapes of rolling hills, olive groves and vineyards; there are many places to sample both the wine and olive oil produced in the area, the latter being some of the finest in France. You can play golf at various courses across Provence, including the nearby Domaine de Manville and there are many walking and cycling routes across Les Alpilles and the neighbouring Luberon. Horse-riding, pony-trekking and even rock-climbing are other popular activities in this part of Provence.
Other wonderful places to visit include the idyllic village of Eygalières and the famous artist’s town of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, especially on a Wednesday morning when the market sells some great local produce.
The historic city of Avignon is well known for its UNESCO World Heritage sites but there are also many wonderful markets, restaurants and bars to discover. Heading south, Arles also has a fascinating history and strong links to Vincent Van Gogh whilst you can reach the incredible Camargue within an hour with its white horses, pink flamingos, endless lagoons and Mediterranean beaches.
