Location:
Situated between the towns of Frigiliana and Nerja, beside the Rio Higueron, Casa Feliz enjoys a peaceful setting whilst being just a short drive to the picturesque coves and white sand bays that dot the nearby coastline.
Hop in the car and head down to the charming town of Nerja, where you can wander around the village-like settlement. Explore its typically narrow streets of white-washed buildings and discover the 17th-century El Salvador Church or historic Hermitage with its lovely painted interior. There are plenty of bars and restaurants to stop for a bite to eat or walk along to the Balcon de Europa, where you can join locals and sip on a drink or share plates of tapas whilst soaking up the glorious smells and sounds that fill the lively street. Be sure to also visit the stunning Caves of Nerja, where visitors can marvel at this piece of natural history, where there is also an annual jazz festival!
There are plenty of beaches nearby, with the central Playa de Burriana just a short walk from the town centre. With a charming boardwalk and stretch of clean white sand, it is a popular spot for families. Spend a day beside the sea, soaking up the sun or hire a kayak and paddle out to explore the hidden waterfalls and narrow gorges that are tucked beyond the cliffs. There are several public amenities nearby, or for a plate of delicious fresh seafood, head to the longstanding Ayos, which has been running since 1969. Every day they prepare a traditional paella over a wood fire filling the area with inviting aromas, and you can sit and enjoy the typical dish whilst admiring the wonderful views out to sea.
For a quieter beach, Carabeillo is tucked just a few minutes around the cliffs, where you can enjoy the less crowded stretch of sand surrounded by wild vegetation. Alternatively, just along the coast, the beautiful Cala del Cañuelo offers a beautiful natural setting with dramatic rocky outcrops and sloping hills rising up behind. Situated in the Acantilados de Maro - Cerro Gordo Nature Reserve, it is perfect for escaping the crowds, taking a peaceful swim in the crystal clear waters or sharing a picnic on the sand. It is also a great spot for snorkelers, and you can discover the wide variety of corals and bright shoals of colourful fish swimming along the seabed.
Whilst there are plenty of hidden coves to discover along the coast, the region also boasts a wonderful landscape with the natural park covering 1,815 hectares, with breathtaking cliffs and forests of Aleppo pine and locust trees. Various trails invite you to take a gentle walk or head into the Sierra de Tejada, Almijara and Alhama Natural Park for a more challenging area and down to the sea below. The route starts in the same place as the Nerja Caves, so you can also stop off for a guided tour to discover the impressive rock formations and learn about the unique history and ancient cave paintings. And on the way back, be sure to stop off at the Acueducto del Aguila, where you can admire the impressive structure built during the height of the industrial revolution to ensure a steady water supply to the local sugar factory.

About the area
Nerja, a coastal town in Spain's Costa del Sol, is a picturesque destination that captivates visitors with its stunning beaches, charming old town, and the spectacular Balcón de Europa viewpoint. This former sleepy fishing village has transformed into a vibrant tourist spot without losing its Andalusian charm.
The town's crowning glory is undoubtedly the Balcón de Europa, a palm-lined promenade offering panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea and the surrounding mountains. Perched on a cliff, this balcony was once a fortress designed to keep out British pirates and now serves as the perfect spot for a leisurely stroll or a sunset gaze.
Nerja's beaches are varied and plentiful, with Playa Burriana being the most famous. This Blue Flag beach is a haven for sunbathers and water sports enthusiasts alike, offering everything from kayaking to paddleboarding. The smaller coves, such as Calahonda and Carabeillo, provide more secluded spots for those seeking tranquility.
The town's historical narrative is rich and can be explored through its landmarks, such as the 17th-century Church of El Salvador and the remnants of the Roman fortress. However, the true historical gem is the Caves of Nerja, a series of caverns stretching for almost 5 kilometers. These prehistoric caves are home to the world's largest stalagmite and host an annual music and dance festival within their natural amphitheater.
Nerja's old town is a labyrinth of narrow, winding streets adorned with white-washed houses and bursts of colorful flowers. The area brims with shops selling local crafts, tapas bars, and restaurants where visitors can indulge in regional specialties like fresh seafood and paella.
For those looking to immerse themselves in local culture, the town's calendar is dotted with festivals, including the San Isidro pilgrimage in May and the Nerja Fair in October. These events are characterized by traditional music, dance, and costumes, offering a glimpse into the vibrant Andalusian spirit.
Active travelers will appreciate the nearby hiking trails, such as the Rio Chillar walk, which leads through a river gorge and offers a refreshing escape during the hot summer months. The surrounding countryside also provides opportunities for mountain biking and horseback riding.
In essence, Nerja is a destination that offers a perfect mix of beach relaxation, cultural exploration, and outdoor adventure. Its blend of natural beauty, historical depth, and lively local culture makes it an enchanting spot for travelers seeking the quintessential Spanish coastal experience.
