There’s a particular kind of quiet that settles over the pines south of Sunriver, where the Big Deschutes and Little Deschutes wind through the forest and the loudest thing around is the wind in the ponderosas. Black Bear Cabin sits right in the middle of it, on a half-acre pocket of Central Oregon’s high country where the sky opens up at dusk and the sunsets run long and orange over the Cascade skyline.
The backyard is where the home earns its keep. Natively landscaped and screened by trees, it opens onto a generous patio with a lounge area, a BBQ grill, and an open-air dining table set for meals that stretch past dark. The hot tub is where most nights end — warm water, cool mountain air, and a night sky far enough from town to actually see. Before that, the evening usually detours through the game garage, where air hockey and foosball turn into tournaments nobody planned on.
Indoors, the pace drops. Contemporary furnishings, deep seating built for sinking into, and a fireplace anchoring the living room make it the natural gathering point for movie nights and slow mornings. Four bedrooms give everyone somewhere to land at the end of the day, with the primary opening directly onto the deck outside — a small luxury that pays off the first morning you carry your coffee out the door without waking a soul.
You’re in the middle of everything Central Oregon does well, without the crowds. Sunriver is about ten minutes north, where the Village brings shops, coffee, and casual dining. Mt. Bachelor is roughly forty minutes out for skiing in winter and lift-served mountain biking come summer, while Benham Falls and the lava fields at Newberry National Volcanic Monument sit around twenty minutes away. The rivers running through this stretch of forest are some of the best fly-fishing water in the state, and downtown Bend and the Old Mill District are about half an hour north when you want restaurants and riverfront shopping.

Along the Deschutes River in Central Oregon, rugged landscapes and scenic Cascade Mountains invite visitors to embrace endless outdoor adventure. White-water rafting, fishing, and rock climbing are great ways to enjoy the warmer months. Come winter, admire the views by mountain on skis, snowboards, or snowshoes. No matter the season, you won’t want to miss dining at seasonal restaurants, touring the breweries, and socializing at the cocktail bars downtown.
