About the area
Savannah, Georgia, is a delightful Southern city that provides a unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. It is renowned for its beautifully preserved antebellum architecture and historic districts, making it a haven for those with an interest in history. The Historic District of the city is one of the largest in the U.S., characterized by cobblestone streets adorned with oak trees draped in moss and magnificent historic residences.
The city's River Street was once the world's bustling hub for cotton exports. Today, it has transformed into a lively waterfront area brimming with shops, galleries, and restaurants situated in former cotton warehouses. Here visitors can take pleasure in breathtaking views of the Savannah River while indulging in local cuisine or shopping for distinctive souvenirs.
The cultural offerings of Savannah are equally captivating. The Telfair Museums comprise three separate sites: the Telfair Academy of Arts and Sciences - one of the first public museums in the South; Owens-Thomas House & Slave Quarters; and Jepson Center - a contemporary art center. Collectively they provide an enriching journey through art and history.
For those who love nature, Savannah's beautiful parks and squares will not disappoint. Forsyth Park is particularly popular due to its iconic fountain while Bonaventure Cemetery offers a hauntingly beautiful landscape filled with sculptures and Victorian funerary art.
Savannah also provides several beach options for visitors to enjoy. Tybee Island is just a short drive from downtown Savannah offering sandy beaches ideal for sunbathing or swimming along with a historic lighthouse that offers panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean.
For food enthusiasts, exploring Savannah's culinary scene will be an adventure as it includes everything from traditional Southern dishes to fresh seafood to innovative farm-to-table dining experiences.
In summary, Savannah presents an engaging combination of historical allure, cultural richness, natural beauty and culinary delights making it an attractive destination for all kinds of travelers.
