About the area
Northamptonshire, often referred to as the "Rose of the Shires," is a county in the heart of England that offers visitors a rich blend of history, culture, and countryside charm. With its rolling hills, historic estates, and quaint villages, Northamptonshire is a destination that promises a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.
One of the county's most famous landmarks is Althorp House, the ancestral home of the Spencer family and the final resting place of Princess Diana. Visitors can explore the beautiful estate, which includes a museum dedicated to the late princess's life and work. The house itself, with its stunning interiors and art collection, is a testament to the grandeur of English aristocracy.
For those interested in motorsports, Northamptonshire is a must-visit. The Silverstone Circuit, home to the British Grand Prix, offers a thrilling experience for racing fans. The circuit hosts a variety of events throughout the year, and there's even the opportunity to drive on the track or visit the Silverstone Interactive Museum to delve into the history of British motor racing.
History enthusiasts will find a wealth of heritage to explore, including the ancient Rockingham Castle, which has been continuously inhabited for almost 1,000 years. The castle's gardens and grounds provide a picturesque setting for a leisurely stroll. Additionally, the county is dotted with historic churches and the remains of Roman settlements, offering a glimpse into the area's rich past.
For outdoor activities, Northamptonshire's countryside is crisscrossed with walking and cycling trails. The Grand Union Canal, which passes through the county, is perfect for canal boat trips, and the scenic Nene Valley is ideal for birdwatching and riverside walks.
The county town of Northampton itself boasts a vibrant cultural scene, with the Northampton Museum and Art Gallery and the Royal & Derngate Theatre offering a range of exhibitions and performances. The town is also known for its shoe-making heritage, and visitors can learn about this traditional craft at the Northampton Museum, which houses the world's largest collection of shoes.
Northamptonshire's culinary offerings include traditional English pubs serving hearty fare, as well as farmers' markets where local produce and artisanal goods can be found. The county's central location also makes it an excellent base for exploring the wider Midlands region.
In essence, Northamptonshire is a destination that offers a peaceful retreat with a touch of luxury, a dash of adrenaline, and a deep dive into England's historical narrative, all set within a landscape that epitomizes the picturesque English countryside.
