Le Belier is a sensitively renovated Provençal farmhouse in a rural location just outside Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, a holiday home where simple countryside pleasures are enjoyed alongside comfort and convenience.
The air-conditioned and elegantly refurbished interior of the main house showcases the original bastide’s wooden beams, exposed stone walls and characterful wooden doors. There are four comfortable double bedrooms whilst an annexe within the grounds offers two further doubles bedrooms, its own small kitchen and a lounge and dining area. Back in the main villa there is plenty of space to take a leisurely evening meal together in the dining room before watching a film making the most of the home cinema or playing a game of billiard.
Set in over one hectare of rustic grounds and bordered by woods, the redolence of the garden’s fig, cypress and plane trees is so typical of the region. A wide terrace runs alongside the south side of the house, ideal for chilling out with a book and a glass of wine. You will love the heated pool and pool house with its pizza oven and lounging area for relaxing after your swim.
It is only a 2km drive from Le Belier to the historic centre of St-Rémy and your route into this lovely town conveniently takes you past the supermarket and shops less than five minutes’ drive away. Once the practicalities have been sorted, park the car in town and stroll towards the cobbled streets of the pedestrianised centre of the “Jewel of Provence”. In a majestic setting between Avignon and Arles, this charming town was loved by Vincent Van Gogh and still inspires many artists. It has galleries, cafés, high-end restaurants and a renowned weekly Wednesday morning market.
The magnificent landscapes of Les Alpilles Natural Park offer many opportunities for exciting family activities as well as the delights of visiting idyllic hillside villages such as Les Baux-de-Provence and Eygalières, both officially classified as Plus Beaux Villages. It is a manageable day trip to the fine cities of Avignon and Nîmes or drive southwards towards Arles, the gateway to the impressive Camargue with its salt marshes, wild white horses, black bulls and pink flamingos.

Location:
Le Belier is situated in a wooded area around 2km away from the historic centre of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence in the Bouches-du-Rhône department of southern France. The shops, supermarkets and other useful amenities of St-Rémy are conveniently even closer to home, less than 1km away.
This charming town, encircled by plane tree lined roads, was home to Nostradamus, Van Gogh and Gertrude Stein amongst others. It is just lovely to stroll around the characterful cobbled lanes of the car-free centre with its shops, cafés, galleries, restaurants and a colourful Wednesday morning market. Local artists still display and sell their artwork each summer Sunday on the lively Route des Artistes and its worth visiting the Musée Archaeologique, to find out more about the archaeological finds at the nearby Roman settlement of Glanum.
St-Rémy lies on the northern edge of the glorious Alpilles Natural Park, the home of small scrub covered mountains, forests, olive groves and summer swathes of sunflowers. It is such a great place for outdoor family activities such as rock climbing, horse riding, hiking and mountain biking as well as more relaxing rambles through gorgeous landscapes. It is here that you will also find the picture-perfect hilltop villages with plane tree shaded squares in this gorgeous part of Provence.
One of these is Les Baux-de-Provence, one of France’s several plus beaux villages in the region, just 10km south from Le Belier. Dramatically perched on the hilltop, it has wonderful views towards Arles, the mountain range of Les Alpilles and even the Camargue. Just a few kilometres further south is the pleasant village of Maussane-les-Alpilles, famous for its production of olive oil. Nearby Fontvieille is another picturesque village with white limestone houses where you can walk the “path of the mills”.
It is only a 25km drive northwards to the historic city of Avignon, with its two UNESCO World Heritage sites. Arles, another source of inspiration to Van Gogh is a similar distance southwards from your holiday home. Don’t forget to visit the remains of the Roman amphitheatre before ordering coffee and cake at one of the restaurant terraces in Place du Forum, where Van Gogh once painted “Café Terrace at Night”.
Southwards from Arles is the splendid Camargue Regional Park, located between the Mediterranean and the two arms of the Rhône river delta. Renowned for its wild white horses, black bulls and pink flamingos, there are great opportunities here for horse riding, quad biking, hiking and bird watching or even an adventurous safari jeep tour from Arles. The capital of the region, Sainte-Maries-de-la-Mer, is just 66km away from Le Belier with its vast sandy beaches.
