Location:
L’Atelier de Charme is located just south of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence in the Bouches-du-Rhône, part of the beautiful Parc Naturel Régional des Alpilles.
Situated on the edge of town in a rural area, backing on to the Canal des Alpines and with other villas and farmhouses dotted around, you can wander into Saint-Rémy in around 10-minutes via country roads (or it’s a short 1.5km drive).
It’s such a joy to wander around this characterful Provençal town with its charming shops, little studios and art galleries including the highly regarded Musée Estrine. Experience the bustling ambience at the Wednesday morning market around Place de la République which attracts visitors from across the region, and look out for art and craft evening markets in the height of the summer.
Dine out in a range of restaurants from traditional French bistros to upmarket establishments and there is a good choice of supermarkets, the largest being just a short drive away.
Follow the footsteps of Vincent Van Gogh with an art trail around the town, ending up at the famous Monastery Saint-Paul de Mausole, also near the archaeological site of Glanum. Art-lovers should also spend some time in Van Gogh’s beloved Arles, around 25km by car, home to the Fondation Vincent Van Gogh and also gateway to the mesmerising Camargue.
Beyond Saint-Rémy, admire the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Avignon, only half an hour away, or drive to Nîmes, famed for its Roman heritage and wonderfully preserved Maison Carrée. Combine with a picnic or canoeing excursion at the Pont du Gard ancient Roman aqueduct, another magnificent sight of southern France.
Then of course there’s the glorious scenery of Le Parc Naturel Régional des Alpilles with landscapes of olive groves, woodland, orchards and idyllic hilltop villages such as Les Baux-de-Provence and Eygalières. Dine out in one of Maussane-les-Alpilles’ many restaurants, visit an olive oil farm and hike or horse-ride through the heart of Les Alpilles.
If you have time, drive to some of the timeless villages of the Luberon region such as Gordes, Roussillon and Bonnieux, all within an hour, or spend the day in L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue (35km), an enchanting town with its river branches, waterwheels, antique shops and Sunday morning brocante.
