Location:
This villa is situated in a naturally stunning village called A Xesteira. Just a two-minute walk away, there is a river encircled by chestnut trees with swaying branches and old-style water wheels. The landscape is serene, with mountains soaring over the rooftops and a lush canopy of trees. Guests can go walking in the hills nearby and make the most of the surrounding nature. The owners of this villa are particularly helpful and will help you with planning your travels around Galicia, so don’t hesitate to ask questions!
Pontevedra is the closest town to the villa - it’s full of fascinating historic architecture and charming cobblestoned alleys. There is a well-preserved Old Town with lots of interesting monuments, like the 16th century Basilica Maria and Capela da Virxe Peregrina, which is shaped like a scallop shell. Take a wander around the historic squares like Teucro, stopping at pavement cafes for some people-watching and ice cream. You can also walk by the River Lérez, which runs through the pedestrian-only town. There are lots of festivals here in the summer months, so keep an eye out online.
Another city worth a day trip is buzzing Vigo. Climb the Castro Fortress, from which you can see incredible 360-degree views of the city. It was built in the 17th century to protect Vigo from intruders. Vigo is famous for great seafood, thanks to its busy fish market and harbour. Oysters are a local speciality and are caught in the nearby Estuary. Visit the street known by locals as Rua de las Ostras to sample some. Vigo has a youthful charm and lots of street art.
As the villa is in the countryside, it’s not within the immediate vicinity of beaches. However, many urban beaches around Vigo with white sand and waters that are great for surfing. Samil beach is a great choice, with 1km of fine sand and dazzling water. It’s got an infectious yet family-friendly vibe. It also has sunsets which are mesmerising to watch with a drink in hand. Alternatively, O Vao beach has lots of water sports to get stuck into, like windsurfing and sailing. This beach also has lovely powdery sand and a lively atmosphere.
However, those in search of picture-perfect white sand beaches with crystalline water should take a trip to the Cies islands. Part of Galicia National Park, the islands of Monteagudo, Faro and San Marino are only accessible by boat. Only a limited number of people can visit the islands each day for conservation reasons, so booking ahead is recommended. The most famous beach is Rodas, but there are several other dazzling shorelines to explore. You can also go hiking and camp overnight on the islands.
