About the area
Modica, a picturesque town in the heart of Sicily's southeastern corner, is a destination that offers a rich blend of history, culture, and gastronomy. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Val di Noto, Modica is famed for its stunning Baroque architecture, which rose from the rubble of a devastating earthquake in 1693.
The town is split into two areas, Modica Alta (Upper Modica) and Modica Bassa (Lower Modica), with the older part of the city perched on the hillside and the newer part in the valley below. The dramatic setting of the town, with houses and buildings clinging to the steep slopes, creates a breathtaking urban landscape.
One of Modica's most iconic landmarks is the Cathedral of San Giorgio, a masterpiece of Sicilian Baroque architecture with a striking staircase of 250 steps leading up to its impressive façade. The cathedral's interior is equally magnificent, with ornate decorations and artworks.
Modica's culinary scene is another highlight, particularly its centuries-old chocolate-making tradition. Influenced by the Spanish during their rule over Sicily, Modica's chocolate is distinctively grainy and aromatic, made using ancient Aztec methods brought to Sicily from the New World. Visitors can indulge in this local delicacy and even visit chocolate shops and factories to learn about the production process.
The town's narrow, winding streets and alleys are a treasure trove of discovery, lined with charming cafes, artisan shops, and historic buildings. The Church of San Pietro and the Castle of the Counts are other notable attractions that add to the town's historical allure.
Modica is also an excellent base for exploring the surrounding region, with other Baroque towns like Ragusa, Noto, and Scicli nearby, each with their own unique charm and architectural wonders. The Sicilian countryside around Modica offers opportunities for hiking, cycling, and enjoying the Mediterranean landscape.
For those interested in literature, Modica is closely associated with the famous Italian writer Leonardo Sciascia and the fictional Inspector Montalbano, whose stories are set in the area.
In essence, Modica is a destination that captivates visitors with its architectural splendor, rich history, and unique flavors. It's a place where the past and present merge to create an experience that is both timeless and unforgettable.
