This barrier island, once a pirate hideout, is now a serene getaway known for its shimmering white beaches, abundant wildlife, and stunning sunsets.
The island's beaches are a major draw, with soft, powdery sand and clear, turquoise waters that are perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and shelling. In fact, Captiva is renowned for its excellent shelling opportunities, with seashells of all shapes and sizes washing ashore, especially after a Gulf storm.
Nature enthusiasts will find plenty to explore on Captiva. The J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge, located on the neighboring Sanibel Island, offers a chance to observe a diverse array of birds and other wildlife in their natural habitat. Kayaking through the mangrove forests provides an intimate look at the island's ecosystem and is a peaceful way to spend an afternoon.
