Area Description:
One of the most original and authentic parts of downtown Athens, the historic neighborhood of Neapolis in Exarheia has been nowadays given a breath of new life. Many of the area’s neoclassical and modernist buildings have been renovated and are getting inhabited by artists, intellectuals and trend-setting families or couples. There is also a swarm of cool new spots opening up – including forward-thinking cafes, chic wine bars and bistros, funky restaurants, and even trendy flower boutiques; and all these co-exist with the area’s characteristic bookstores, record shops, art cinemas and legendary rock bars. There are also several hairdressers, nail salons and barbers’ shops around; while apart from major super market chains, you’ll spot a choice of gourmet foods stores with award winning, local products.
Highlights
Most landmark monuments and sights, including the National Archaeological Museum are within walking distance (less than 20 mins), while Athens’ storied fruit market in Kallidromiou street (some 10 mins walk from the flat) is held every Saturday and is the meeting place of an international crowd of artists and fashion forward hipsters. Towering above Exarheia, the leafy hill of Lycabettus is accessible on foot (some 10 mins) and has incredible views over the city and many hiking and walking paths. Just opposite, Strefi hill (450 meters from the apartment) is where the locals walk their dogs or just hang out.
Plaka and the historical center are about half hour’s walk away. The Acropolis and its emblematic Museum are at 3 Km; the posh Kolonaki area with its high-end boutiques and chic eateries, is 1,4 Km from your doorstep, and Syndagma square at 2 Km.
With excellent bus connections for easy access to all parts of the town, Neapolis is as convenient as it is uniquely atmospheric.
