1858 Homestead
Built as a 19th-century homestead near the mouth of the Eel River, this redwood home in Ferndale is steeped in local history. As part of an organic, working dairy farm passed through five generations, this is a place to find relaxation among beautiful flower beds, a vegetable garden, and serene pastoral scenery.
This home was originally built in the late 1800s, from old-growth redwood, on a piece of the Lost Coast Headlands, now overseen by the Bureau of Land Management. The Eel River is just up the road, and Centerville Beach is less than six miles southwest. Ferndale boasts several small-town charms, including America’s tallest living Christmas tree, great concerts at The Old Steeple, and the Humboldt County Fair - all within a three-mile drive. This home makes the perfect base for excursions up and down the North Coast, whether you’re planning to explore the redwoods at Humboldt Redwoods State Park about 23 miles south, visit Cal Poly Humboldt 28 miles north, or backpack the Lost Coast Trail: Mattole Beach is 37 miles south. You’ll return to lovely gardens planted with flowers and vegetables and a sweeping view of the surrounding dairy farm and valley each afternoon.
The two-story interior is full of simple country charms, from the shiplap walls to the woodstove that warms the living room. Enjoy an open kitchen with every essential, a dining room table where you can gather for dinners and board games, and a TV with cable and streaming capability for family movie nights. Large windows beautifully light the bedrooms, and a Pack ’n Play and baby gate are provided for your little ones. You’ll also have a private washer/dryer, forced air heat, and complimentary WiFi for your comfort and convenience.
