About the area
Lawton, Oklahoma is a city that offers a unique blend of cultural heritage, outdoor activities, and military history. It's located near the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, a vast natural expanse that is home to buffalo, Texas longhorn cattle, prairie dogs and elk. While these animals are indeed present in the refuge, they are contained within certain areas rather than freely roaming the entire refuge. The refuge offers hiking trails with stunning views and opportunities for wildlife viewing.
The city itself is rich in Native American history. The Museum of the Great Plains features interactive exhibits about the region's indigenous cultures and the settlers who later arrived. However, it should be noted that this museum is part of the Western Heritage Museum complex and not a standalone entity. The Comanche National Museum and Cultural Center provides an in-depth look at the Comanche Nation's history and traditions.
Lawton is also home to Fort Sill, an active Army post that has been designated as a National Historic Landmark. Visitors can explore its museum which showcases not only the fort's significant role in American military history but also local Native American culture and regional history.
For those interested in arts and culture, Lawton has plenty to offer. The city hosts numerous events throughout the year including the International Festival, a celebration of cultural diversity featuring food, music and dance from around the world.
Food lovers will enjoy Lawton's culinary scene which includes local favorites like barbecue and Tex-Mex cuisine as well as international options.
In essence, Lawton offers visitors a mix of cultural experiences, outdoor adventures and historical attractions making it an interesting destination for various types of travelers.
