Area Description:
Close to Thiseio and the Acropolis but safely removed from their tourist traps, Petralona blends old-school charm, artistic vibes and boho haunts. Like many parts of the downtown, this too, seems kind of disorganized and chaotic, with a haphazard mix of different architectural styles and lots of graffiti. But then again this is where its allure lays – in true Athenian style. Amid the whole scruffy setting there are alternative-chic joints – from traditional taverns with a twist, to experimental places featuring theater and gigs, Thai and French restaurants and trend-setting bars. Launched by a swarm of young creatives who’ve recently relocated in the area, these eye-catching spots are responsible for the area’s renaissance - Petralona is often dubbed the “New Gazi”. It still retains though a distinctly local character and feel, without being over-commercialized or pretentious like its fabled neighbor. Petralona is also conveniently positioned for exploring the city on foot. The flat is no more than a 30 mins walk away from the Acropolis and Plaka and about 20 from the leafy hill of Filopappou and the Odeon of Herodes Atticus. The Ancient Agora is at 2.2 km, and the Roman Agora at 2.4 km. The quaint shopping/ sightseeing district of Monastiraki is 2.7km away, and Syntagma, the heart of the city at 3.6 km.
Plus, the “Petralona” station with metro, bus and tram connections is some 500 meters away, so you can easily venture everywhere in Athens.

About the area
Plaka, nestled at the foot of the Acropolis in Athens, Greece, is a charming neighborhood that offers a delightful blend of history, culture, and scenic beauty. Known as the "Neighborhood of the Gods," Plaka's labyrinthine streets and neoclassical architecture transport visitors back to a bygone era, making it a must-visit for anyone traveling to Athens.
The area is steeped in history, with landmarks such as the Tower of the Winds, an ancient octagonal clocktower, and the Roman Agora, a reminder of the city's Roman past. The district's proximity to the Acropolis means that visitors can easily combine a visit to this iconic site with a leisurely stroll through Plaka's alleys, where every turn reveals a new piece of history or a stunning view of the city.
Plaka's vibrant atmosphere is complemented by its array of shops, where travelers can find everything from handmade jewelry and traditional Greek crafts to fine art and antiques. The neighborhood is also home to numerous tavernas and cafes, offering the perfect opportunity to sample Greek cuisine or enjoy a cup of coffee while people-watching in a picturesque square.
For those interested in cultural experiences, the Museum of Greek Folk Art and the Jewish Museum of Greece provide insights into the country's rich cultural tapestry. Meanwhile, the restored neoclassical homes, some of which have been converted into small museums or galleries, add to the area's cultural allure.
Despite its popularity, Plaka has managed to retain a sense of tranquility, especially in the evenings when the day-trippers have departed. The neighborhood's winding streets and hidden courtyards become even more enchanting as the sun sets, and the Acropolis is illuminated above, creating a magical backdrop for an evening out.
In addition to its historical and cultural offerings, Plaka is also known for its lush green spaces. The National Garden of Athens is just a short walk away, providing a peaceful escape from the urban environment with its shaded pathways and quiet ponds.
In essence, Plaka is a destination that offers an immersive experience, where the past and present coexist harmoniously. Its combination of historical significance, cultural richness, and enchanting ambiance makes it an unforgettable part of any visit to Athens.
