Location:
Villa Mare Sea’s position on the ’almost’ private sandy beach means you won’t want to be away for long. However the temptation of a boat trip in the owner’s boat to another restaurant or just to see the beautiful coast could be enough temptation. the beach here has gold sands and warm shallow waters. Within a short drive you have the Lefkimmi Marina and a few tavernas. The small town of Lefkimmi is less than 5km away, surrounded by countryside, Lefkimmi hasn’t been developed for tourism and retains an old-school charm. A river runs through the town which offers a selection of restaurants and cafés, good places to try some authentic cuisine. While Lefkimmi feels unmistakably Greek, Corfu Town owes much of its character to the nations who controlled it at one time or another. You’ll seee Italian architecture, a British cricket green, Italian gelato and many Greek foods. The chic café terraces of the Liston may even call to mind Paris – it was indeed built by the French. A period of British rule is credited with the curious popularity of cricket on Corfu; you may find a game going on at Spianada Square. The Palace of St Michael and St George is a Neoclassical mansion built for the British High Commissioner in the early 19th century, which is now home to the Museum of Asian Art. Pay a visit to see works originating from Japan, China and India, among others. It’s worth going just for the café as this has a wonderful view out to sea in the direction of Albania. Other cultural highlights in town include the Municipal Gallery, Archaeological Museum and Byzantine Museum. You can walk up to the top of the Old Fortress in about 20 minutes, although the cobbled slope can be slippery, so choose your footwear accordingly.Other notable landmarks include the palace of Mon Repos, the birthplace of the late Duke of Edinburgh, and the grand Achillion. Built as a summer palace for Empress Elisabeth of Austria, this building stands in beautiful gardens.Elsewhere, the island is full of unspoilt natural landscapes and wonderful beaches. The likes of Dassia, Paleokastritsa and Kavos – the latter only around 15 minutes’ drive from Lefkimmi – are reckoned to be amongst the best in Greece.
