Location:
The small town of Skradin lies at the entrance to the Krka National Park, famed for its magnificent waterfalls. The town packs in some impressive sights of its own, and the view from the bridge which crosses the River Krka is one. The whole town is designated as a protected cultural monument, and it will be easy to understand why as you potter around its charming centre.
The town lies close to the river where a marina and a host of waterside restaurants can be found. This is perfect country for walking or cycling, and it’s easy to take a boat trip too. The river will eventually lead you south to the stunning town of Šibenik, around 20km away. This is a trip you should definitely make, with its medieval centre the part of town to see. Make the climb up to St Michael’s Fortress to get a bird’s eye view.
Also in Šibenik, the elaborate St James’ Cathedral holds World Heritage Site status, and was constructed entirely from stone sourced from nearby islands such as Brač and Korčula. Worth a visit too are the Mediterranean Monastery Gardens, a fun aquarium and the Šibenik City Museum. In summer, the town hosts some great festivals, including the International Children’s Festival, which brings music, dance, children’s theatre and film to Šibenik.
It’s a little over an hour to Split and Zadar – Šibenik lies roughly halfway between the two. In Split, there’s Diocletian’s Palace and much more of historical note, while Zadar is becoming known for unique attractions like the Sea Organ and the Sun Salutation – both truly memorable experiences.
