2024 Resorts & Retreats Awards hosted by LUXlife - Villa Romane - Most Charming Luxury Villa 2024, Occitaine
(“LUXlife awards celebrate the tradition of acknowledging unparalleled achievements and exceptional creativity in the realm of luxury“)
Villa Romane is a spacious stone-built holiday villa in Provence with its own magnificent Roman-style colonnaded circular swimming pool. The house is superbly located, offering wonderful panoramic views of Provence and the Rhone valley. It’s just 1.5km out of the historic medieval town of Beaucaire with its tree-lined colourful marina. There are countless restaurants, cafès, shops, supermarkets and boulangeries a short walk away through country lanes. Despite its close proximity to nearby amenities, the high walls surrounding the villa and its tranquil hilltiop location makes for a peaceful and secluded atmosphere, so you have the best of both worlds.
The main villa can sleep 12 guests in its 6 large double bedrooms, some of which can be converted into twin beds if preferred. It also boasts five bath/shower rooms, three large reception rooms and a fully-fitted kitchen. The separate dining area and the al-fresco dining terrace are both great places for entertaining and serving delicious home-cooked meals.
The 13 to 16-person rate also includes separate accommodation at ’La Petite Villa Romane’ which can accommodate up to 4 extra guests in style and comfort (as featured in the photographs). It is a charming one-bedroom single-storey cottage tucked away in the corner of the gardens of the main villa. It is perfect for an older couple who may wish to have peace and quiet, separate from, but near to the main villa, or for a romantic couple who would like total privacy, or for a small family or perhaps even accompanying staff.
The ’Petite Villa’ is charmingly furnished and decorated in an authentic Provencal style with beautiful tapestries adorning the walls. Both the living area with its sofa-bed and bedroom have glazed double-doors opening directly out on to the shaded sun-terrace and the secluded and totally private ’petite’ garden.
The spectacular circular pool was built in the style of a Roman colonnaded arena and can be illuminated at night. The poolside terrace with its summer kitchen, barbecue, sun terrace and shaded summer lounge is a real feature of this fantastic French holiday villa, and coupled with the views from the terrace, can only be described as paradise!
There is plenty to explore in this charming area of Provence, with beautiful and historic towns such as Avignon, Nimes and Arles as well as the chic and fashionable St. Remy de Provence and Uzes, all within a short driving distance. Also not to be missed are visits to the Pont du Gard, the Luberon and the Camargue.

About the area
Tarascon, nestled in the heart of Provence, France, is a charming town that offers a rich tapestry of cultural heritage, medieval architecture, and Provençal tradition. It is a destination that invites travelers to step back in time and immerse themselves in the tranquility and beauty of southern France.
One of the town's most iconic landmarks is the Château de Tarascon, a medieval fortress that stands majestically on the banks of the Rhône River. This well-preserved castle is a fine example of medieval military architecture and offers visitors a glimpse into the past with its imposing walls, towers, and inner courtyard. The castle also hosts various exhibitions and events throughout the year, adding a contemporary touch to its ancient stones.
The town of Tarascon is also famous for its association with the mythical creature Tarasque, which, according to legend, was tamed by Saint Martha. The story is celebrated every year during the Fête de la Tarasque, a vibrant festival that features parades, music, and traditional costumes, showcasing the town's folklore and community spirit.
For those interested in religious history, the Collegiate Church of Saint Martha is a must-visit. This beautiful church houses the relics of Saint Martha and features stunning Romanesque and Gothic architectural elements, as well as exquisite frescoes and sculptures.
Tarascon's weekly market is a feast for the senses, where visitors can sample local produce, including olives, cheeses, and the region's famous textiles. The town's textile industry is renowned, and the Souleiado Museum provides an insight into the history and craftsmanship of Provençal fabrics, with its colorful patterns that have adorned homes and fashion for centuries.
The surrounding countryside of Tarascon is quintessentially Provençal, with fields of lavender, sunflowers, and vineyards stretching to the horizon. It's an ideal setting for leisurely walks, cycling, or even a picnic amidst the picturesque landscape.
For those looking to explore beyond Tarascon, the town's location makes it an excellent base for day trips to other notable destinations in Provence, such as the ancient Roman city of Arles, the vibrant city of Avignon, and the natural beauty of the Camargue.
In essence, Tarascon is a destination that offers a blend of historical intrigue, cultural richness, and the laid-back lifestyle of the Provence region. It's a place where travelers can enjoy the slower pace of life, savor the local flavors, and be enchanted by the timeless charm of southern France.
