About the area
Protaras, located on the eastern coast of Cyprus, is a sun-soaked haven that beckons travelers with its crystal-clear waters and golden sandy beaches. This resort town is particularly famous for Fig Tree Bay, a picturesque beach that has been awarded for its outstanding quality and is often ranked among the best beaches in Europe. With shallow, calm waters, it's an ideal spot for families and those looking to indulge in a variety of water sports.
Beyond the allure of its beaches, Protaras is a treasure trove of natural beauty. The area is home to the Cape Greco National Forest Park, a protected nature reserve offering stunning landscapes, sea caves, and a wealth of flora and fauna. Hiking trails and cycling paths wind through the park, leading adventurers to breathtaking viewpoints and secluded coves. For the more daring, the park's cliffs are popular spots for cliff diving.
The town itself is a vibrant mix of traditional charm and modern amenities. Visitors can stroll along the main strip, which is lined with a wide array of shops, tavernas, and bars. The local cuisine is a highlight, with fresh seafood and traditional Cypriot dishes on offer, often accompanied by live music and the warm hospitality of the locals.
For those interested in history and culture, the nearby town of Paralimni presents a more traditional Cypriot experience, with its historic churches and quaint village square. Additionally, the ancient city of Salamis is within reach for a day trip, where one can explore impressive ruins that hark back to the city's glory days under Greek and Roman rule.
Protaras also serves as a fantastic base for exploring the wider region. The bustling town of Ayia Napa, known for its lively nightlife and cultural events, is just a short drive away. Meanwhile, the tranquil, unspoiled landscapes of the Karpas Peninsula are within reach for those seeking a more serene adventure.
With its combination of stunning natural attractions, cultural experiences, and family-friendly activities, Protaras offers a well-rounded holiday destination. Whether you're looking to relax on the beach, explore the great outdoors, or immerse yourself in local culture, Protaras caters to all tastes and ages, making it a truly worthwhile place to visit.
