About the area
Ferndale, California, is a picturesque small town that seems to have sprung from the pages of a storybook. Nestled in Humboldt County, this Victorian gem offers travelers a charming escape into a bygone era, coupled with the natural beauty of Northern California.
The town's main street, lined with well-preserved Victorian storefronts and homes, is a living museum of 19th-century architecture. Visitors can take a leisurely stroll down the street, which has been featured in numerous films and commercials, and feel transported to another time. The Ferndale Museum provides a deeper dive into the local history, showcasing artifacts and exhibits that tell the story of the town's past.
Art and culture thrive in Ferndale, with galleries and studios dotting the town. The local artists are often inspired by the surrounding landscapes, and their work adds a contemporary touch to the historic setting. The Ferndale Repertory Theatre, the oldest and largest of its kind in the area, offers a range of performances throughout the year, from musicals to comedies, enriching the town's cultural landscape.
For those who appreciate the great outdoors, Ferndale is a gateway to the Lost Coast, California's most undeveloped stretch of shoreline. Hiking trails offer breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean and lead to secluded beaches, where the sense of tranquility is as vast as the ocean itself. The nearby Humboldt Redwoods State Park is home to some of the tallest trees on Earth, providing a majestic backdrop for hiking, camping, and nature photography.
Ferndale is also a hub for foodies, with a focus on farm-to-table dining experiences. The surrounding fertile lands yield a bounty of fresh produce, dairy, and meats, which local chefs skillfully transform into delicious culinary creations. The town's eateries range from cozy cafes to fine dining establishments, all serving up a taste of the region's best.
Festivals and events throughout the year celebrate everything from the town's agricultural roots to its artistic flair. The Humboldt County Fair, one of the oldest in California, brings together the community for livestock exhibitions, carnival rides, and horse racing.
In essence, Ferndale offers a unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. It's a place where time slows down, allowing visitors to savor each moment, whether it's marveling at Victorian architecture, exploring rugged coastlines, or enjoying the local flavors.
