Acropolis is one of the most picturesque neighborhoods in Athens. It is also known as Makrigianni quarter in Athens, where the statue of Makrigiannis lies, the hero of the Greek Revolution, that is found at the beginning of this street, in a small round square. Its architectural beauty and its historical significance, make this quarter popular among tourists and a favorite spot of the Athenians to stroll around on a Sunday morning, under the Holy Rock. It borders with the picturesque neighborhood of Plaka from one side and the region of Koukaki on the other.
The most famous sights in Athens are found within a walking distance from the Neighborhood. Museums include the new Acropolis Museum (5 minute walk from the apartment), the new Jewish Museum of Greece (13 min walk), the Museum of Greek Folk Art (12 min walk), an annex of which is the Old Public Baths building, the Frissiras Museum, the Museum of Popular Music Instruments, the Museum of Pavlos and Alexandra Kanellopoulou and the Athens University Museum (12 min walk). Nearby is Adrianou Street (10 min walk) which may be the oldest street in Athens still in continuous use with exactly the same layout since antiquity, that leads to the Roman Agora - Roman Forum (15 min walk) and to Thiseio. Also, Acropolis entrance is a 5 min walk from the apartment. About the area
Plaka, nestled at the foot of the Acropolis in Athens, Greece, is a charming neighborhood that offers a delightful blend of history, culture, and scenic beauty. Known as the "Neighborhood of the Gods," Plaka's labyrinthine streets and neoclassical architecture transport visitors back to a bygone era, making it a must-visit for anyone traveling to Athens.
The area is steeped in history, with landmarks such as the Tower of the Winds, an ancient octagonal clocktower, and the Roman Agora, a reminder of the city's Roman past. The district's proximity to the Acropolis means that visitors can easily combine a visit to this iconic site with a leisurely stroll through Plaka's alleys, where every turn reveals a new piece of history or a stunning view of the city.
Plaka's vibrant atmosphere is complemented by its array of shops, where travelers can find everything from handmade jewelry and traditional Greek crafts to fine art and antiques. The neighborhood is also home to numerous tavernas and cafes, offering the perfect opportunity to sample Greek cuisine or enjoy a cup of coffee while people-watching in a picturesque square.
For those interested in cultural experiences, the Museum of Greek Folk Art and the Jewish Museum of Greece provide insights into the country's rich cultural tapestry. Meanwhile, the restored neoclassical homes, some of which have been converted into small museums or galleries, add to the area's cultural allure.
Despite its popularity, Plaka has managed to retain a sense of tranquility, especially in the evenings when the day-trippers have departed. The neighborhood's winding streets and hidden courtyards become even more enchanting as the sun sets, and the Acropolis is illuminated above, creating a magical backdrop for an evening out.
In addition to its historical and cultural offerings, Plaka is also known for its lush green spaces. The National Garden of Athens is just a short walk away, providing a peaceful escape from the urban environment with its shaded pathways and quiet ponds.
