The town is located on the edge of the Peak District National Park and is surrounded by spectacular hills and limestone cliffs. Today these cliffs attract rock climbers and the magnificent riverside setting in a steep wooded gorge, attracts walkers and canoeists. The Matlock Valley is honeycombed with both caves and old lead mine workings, some of which are thought to date back to Roman times.
