Maunaloa Shores 612
Maunaloa Shores 612 is a retreat that feels like home. This rental has recently been redone in tropical decor, accented by original artwork and there are comfortable armchairs both inside and out on the private lanai. Its central location makes walks to the beach to swim and relax just minutes away, or you can roam the farmer’s market, shops, and many restaurants conveniently located nearby. There is also a shared, freshwater pool on-site if you’d rather stay close to home.
What’s nearby:
Take a short walk to Carlsmith Park next door for a dip in the ocean where the lagoons create calm swimming areas and provide protection from the surf. The four-mile stretch of different swimming coves in this area (called Keaukaha) is a wonderful location to introduce children and newcomers to the water. Keep an eye out for our local Hawaiian monk seal ’mama’ and her children who sometimes pop up on shore in this neighborhood, but don’t disturb them as they are very endangered.

Hilo, Hawaii, is a delightful city that provides a unique mix of natural splendor, cultural depth, and adventurous pursuits. Situated on the east side of the Big Island, Hilo is renowned for its verdant rainforests, spectacular waterfalls, and tranquil beaches.
One of the main attractions in Hilo is the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. This UNESCO World Heritage Site houses two active volcanoes: Kilauea and Mauna Loa. The park's diverse landscapes can be explored via its extensive network of hiking trails or by taking a scenic drive along Crater Rim Drive or Chain of Craters Road.
The downtown area of Hilo offers a peek into its history with well-preserved historic buildings. The Pacific Tsunami Museum provides an intriguing look into tsunami history and preparedness. The Lyman Museum also offers insights into the region's history. Meanwhile, local art is showcased at the East Hawaii Cultural Center which also hosts various cultural events throughout the year.
Nature enthusiasts will appreciate Hilo's plentiful green spaces. Liliuokalani Park and Gardens is a stunning Japanese-style garden that offers peaceful views of Hilo Bay. Rainbow Falls and Akaka Falls are must-visit locations due to their awe-inspiring beauty.
For astronomy enthusiasts, Mauna Kea Observatories should not be missed. Positioned atop Mauna Kea mountain, these observatories are often praised as one of the world's premier astronomy sites due to their high altitude, stable air conditions, and minimal light pollution.
Hilo also has a vibrant food scene reflecting its multicultural heritage. Visitors can try local Hawaiian cuisine at farmers markets or dine at restaurants serving everything from traditional Hawaiian dishes to Asian fusion cuisine.
In summary, Hilo provides an authentic Hawaiian experience away from more crowded tourist destinations like Honolulu or Maui. Its natural wonders, rich culture, historical charm and friendly locals make it an exploration-worthy destination for any traveler.
