About the area
Girdwood, Alaska, is a small mountain town that offers an enchanting mix of outdoor adventure, stunning scenery, and cozy retreats. Nestled in a valley in the Chugach Mountains, Girdwood is a paradise for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike.
The town's crown jewel is the Alyeska Resort, Alaska's premier ski destination, which provides a range of winter sports opportunities from downhill skiing and snowboarding to snowshoeing and dog sledding. The resort's aerial tramway offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains, glaciers, and the Turnagain Arm of the Cook Inlet.
In the summer, Girdwood transforms into a hiker's haven with trails that cater to all levels of experience. One of the most popular hikes is the Winner Creek Trail, which leads adventurers through lush rainforest to a hand tram over a scenic gorge. For those seeking a challenge, the hike up to Crow Pass offers stunning vistas and the chance to see remnants of the historic Iditarod Trail.
Girdwood is also a gateway to the Kenai Peninsula, where visitors can explore the Kenai Fjords National Park and witness the awe-inspiring beauty of glaciers calving into the ocean. Wildlife enthusiasts may spot bald eagles, bears, and moose, as well as marine life like whales, sea otters, and seals.
The town itself exudes a quaint, laid-back charm, with local restaurants serving fresh Alaskan seafood and other delicacies. The Double Musky Inn is renowned for its New Orleans-style cuisine, while the Bake Shop offers hearty breakfasts and homemade bread that are perfect after a day of outdoor activities.
For a touch of culture, the Girdwood Forest Fair, held annually in July, celebrates local art, music, and crafts in a festive atmosphere. The town also has a strong community of artists, and visitors can browse galleries and studios to find unique Alaskan artwork and souvenirs.
Girdwood's proximity to Anchorage, just a 45-minute drive away, makes it an accessible escape into the wilderness without being too remote. Whether you're looking for adrenaline-pumping adventures, serene natural beauty, or a cozy mountain town vibe, Girdwood is a destination that offers a truly Alaskan experience.
