Location:
Villa Loli is located on the outskirts of Frigiliana, a charming village once voted the most beautiful in all of Andalucia – and with its winding cobblestone streets, pristine whitewashed houses topped with Roman terracotta tiles and healthy flower pots adorning every windowsill, it’s no wonder why! Historic buildings and sites of Muslim and Christian origin are strewn throughout the cobbled streets, evidence of deeply multicultural history. And sitting just on the edge of the Sierra Almijara National Park, the surrounding landscape is sublime: thriving acres of avocado orchards and olive trees are nestled among luscious rolling hills and winding rivers as they slope towards the deep blue of the Mediterranean Sea. In the quiet tranquillity, Frigiliana still manages to offer an array of restaurants, services and shops for those who prefer want a quick stop.
In the nearby town of Nerja, just a ten-minute drive away, you can enjoy fiestas and concerts, learn flamenco dancing or pick up some of the local wares at one of the many markets or boutique shops. Malaga, the nearest city at less than an hour away, is the largest city on the Costa del Sol and historically and culturally incredibly rich, putting ever more activities and amenities at your fingertips. As the birthplace of Pablo Picasso, the city is, of course, brimming with museums and art galleries, set among a beautiful cityscape of castles, cathedrals and theatres.
The Costa del Sol itself is largely peaceful and quiet, as although there is a large amount of tourism, largely for the fantastic beaches and warm climate (the average water temperature year-round is 18°C!), the tourists tend to stick to the much more developed south-western part. The region of Andalucía is a diverse one both culturally and in the landscape, where picturesque beaches, ancient cities and deserts meet the incredible Sierra Nevada mountain range, which includes both the most southerly ski resort in Europe and the highest point of continental Europe!

About the area
Nerja, a coastal town in Spain's Costa del Sol, is a picturesque destination that captivates visitors with its stunning beaches, charming old town, and the spectacular Balcón de Europa viewpoint. This former sleepy fishing village has transformed into a vibrant tourist spot without losing its Andalusian charm.
The town's crowning glory is undoubtedly the Balcón de Europa, a palm-lined promenade offering panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea and the surrounding mountains. Perched on a cliff, this balcony was once a fortress designed to keep out British pirates and now serves as the perfect spot for a leisurely stroll or a sunset gaze.
Nerja's beaches are varied and plentiful, with Playa Burriana being the most famous. This Blue Flag beach is a haven for sunbathers and water sports enthusiasts alike, offering everything from kayaking to paddleboarding. The smaller coves, such as Calahonda and Carabeillo, provide more secluded spots for those seeking tranquility.
The town's historical narrative is rich and can be explored through its landmarks, such as the 17th-century Church of El Salvador and the remnants of the Roman fortress. However, the true historical gem is the Caves of Nerja, a series of caverns stretching for almost 5 kilometers. These prehistoric caves are home to the world's largest stalagmite and host an annual music and dance festival within their natural amphitheater.
Nerja's old town is a labyrinth of narrow, winding streets adorned with white-washed houses and bursts of colorful flowers. The area brims with shops selling local crafts, tapas bars, and restaurants where visitors can indulge in regional specialties like fresh seafood and paella.
For those looking to immerse themselves in local culture, the town's calendar is dotted with festivals, including the San Isidro pilgrimage in May and the Nerja Fair in October. These events are characterized by traditional music, dance, and costumes, offering a glimpse into the vibrant Andalusian spirit.
Active travelers will appreciate the nearby hiking trails, such as the Rio Chillar walk, which leads through a river gorge and offers a refreshing escape during the hot summer months. The surrounding countryside also provides opportunities for mountain biking and horseback riding.
In essence, Nerja is a destination that offers a perfect mix of beach relaxation, cultural exploration, and outdoor adventure. Its blend of natural beauty, historical depth, and lively local culture makes it an enchanting spot for travelers seeking the quintessential Spanish coastal experience.
