One of the main attractions in Nelson Bay is dolphin and whale watching. The area is a haven for bottlenose dolphins, and several operators offer tours to see these playful creatures up close. Between May and November, migrating humpback whales can also be spotted, providing an awe-inspiring spectacle for nature lovers.
For those who prefer to dive into the underwater world, Nelson Bay is a premier destination for scuba diving and snorkeling. The Port Stephens-Great Lakes Marine Park offers a diverse range of marine life and underwater landscapes, including the famous Fly Point-Halifax Park Aquatic Reserve, where divers can explore sponge gardens and kelp forests teeming with fish.
Beach enthusiasts will find their slice of heaven on the soft sands of Nelson Bay. Zenith Beach, Shoal Bay, and Fingal Bay are just a few of the stunning beaches that offer opportunities for swimming, sunbathing, and surfing. For a panoramic view of the area, visitors can hike up to the summit of Tomaree Head. The walk rewards with breathtaking vistas of the coastline, offshore islands, and the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean. The surrounding Tomaree National Park is also a great spot for bushwalking and spotting local wildlife, including koalas and a variety of bird species.
