This site was once a thriving Roman town with a triumphal arch, family homes, a bath house and a mausoleum and has been here for over 2000 years.  As well as its beautiful countryside and open-spaces, Provence is known for its charming villages and towns. The closest is Saint-Rémy-de-Provence which is just 4km away by car. This is a fantastic town with everything you need during your break, though it is more of an authentic Provencal town than a tourist town. In the centre, you can find artisan shops, cafes, bars, restaurants and supermarkets, so you can pick up all of your grocery shopping here or just browse the specialist shops such as the cheese-mongers or the chocolatiers which line the postcard-worthy streets. On top of these amenities, Saint-Rémy-de-Provence is famous for its link to artist Vincent Van Gogh; the artist lived here at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole monastery for a year of his life. While in town, Van Gogh created over 100 works of art, though he was struggling with his personal life in this period.
