The town is perhaps best known for the Ottawa National Forest, which surrounds Watersmeet and offers over a million acres of forested land. Hikers and nature photographers will find themselves enchanted by the forest's diverse ecosystems, which include hardwood forests, wetlands, and clear lakes. The Sylvania Wilderness Area, part of the national forest, is a particular highlight with old-growth forests and tranquil lakes perfect for canoeing and fishing.
Watersmeet's name itself comes from the point where the Ontonagon River, the Middle Branch, and the South Branch converge, making it a prime location for fishing. Anglers can expect to catch a variety of fish, including trout, bass, and walleye. The area's numerous lakes and rivers also make it ideal for kayaking and boating, offering peaceful waters and scenic views.
In the winter, Watersmeet transforms into a snowy wonderland, attracting snowmobilers and cross-country skiers. The area boasts an extensive network of snowmobile trails that are well-maintained and connect to other trail systems in the Upper Peninsula and northern Wisconsin. The snow-covered landscape also provides opportunities for ice fishing, snowshoeing, and even dog sledding.
For those interested in cultural experiences, the Lac Vieux Desert Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians has a strong presence in the area. Visitors can learn about the tribe's history and culture, and perhaps even attend a pow-wow or other cultural event.
Accommodations in Watersmeet range from cozy cabins and lodges to campgrounds, catering to those who wish to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the region. Local eateries offer hearty meals, often featuring locally-sourced fish and game, providing a taste of the regional cuisine.
Watersmeet's remote charm and the wealth of natural attractions make it a destination for travelers seeking a peaceful retreat and outdoor adventure. Whether you're casting a line in the clear waters, exploring the forest trails, or simply enjoying the tranquility of the Upper Peninsula, Watersmeet offers a pure and authentic slice of Michigan's wilderness.
